Tyler, Texas and Longview, Texas have wonderful Habitat for Humanity "Re-Stores". I am sure you have something like this in your area. I dislike seeing the destruction of homeowners taking a sledgehammer to completely servicable counters, cubboards, and shelving. They do this on the remodeling shows; do they think this is funny? I know it takes more time to remove these items with very little damage, but in the long run, it would be a wonderful addition to someone's old kitchen. In these hard times, let us all try and conserve, let us donate these items to the Habitat for Humanity. Let them make a little money from our donations.

Very common complaint around the boards. Keep in mind the hosts of TV shows and the moderators at HGTV.com don't really read these posts looking for ideas. If you want to contact HGTV about it you need to go to the "contact us" link on the bottom of the page.

There was a show on Discovery a few years back called Moving Up that was a big offender. I remember one episode where they trashed 2 year old cabinets that weren't the right color.

General Disclaimer

Any advice given here is general in nature and is not necessarily valid for your given area. If in doubt check with your local codes enforcement department for what is required when doing electrical, plumbing or structural work on your house. Permits may or may not be required in your area and home owners may not be able to DIY some tasks. I have no way of knowing if you have the skills needed to complete the tasks you are asking about, when in doubt seek professional assistance.

My advice may be worth exactly what you pay me for it. :-) For the record I did not stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

This is TV. They strive for entertainment, not for anything else.

I WISH THE PRODUCERS OF THESE REMODELING SHOWS WOULD RETHINK THEIR SLEDGEHAMMER DRAMA AND CONSIDER THE MESSAGE OF WASTEFULLNESS THEY ARE SENDING. BEING GREEN DOESN'T ALWAYS MEAN SUSTAINABLE NATURAL PRODUCTS, BUT LEAVING A SMALLER FOOTPRINT AND NOT FILLING LANDFILLS WITH PERFECTLY GOOD REUSABLE AND REPURPOSED BUILDING MATERIALS. THE MONEY FROM THE SALE OF THESE DONATED MATERIALS GOES TO BUILDING AFFORDABLE HOMES FOR DESERVING LOW INCOME FAMILIES. SO SAVE THE SLEDGE DRAMA FOR THE SHEETROCK AND WALLS!

Kibbie,
Welcome to the boards. Lose the CAPS Lock, it is hard to read and considered SHOUTING on message boards.

DH and I were just talking about this last night. We will be removing the base cabinets this weekend and removed the top ones last Saturday. They were easy to remove, no sledgehammer or prybar needed. They are going in his new shop.
If we were not going to reuse them ourselves, we certainly would have brought them to HFH for someone else to use. They are perfectly fine...just Melamine and laminate.

I don't see why some need to be destroyed either...is it for dramatic purposes?

When I remodeled my home in DC, I called the county and asked for a list of non-profits who would be interested in the cabinets, countertops and appliances, and would be willing to haul them away. It worked out well for all, and I didn't not have the expense of hauling or dumping!

Kermie, very good idea! Locally Habitat for Humanity will pick up donated items.

A contractor in our church did a major remodel on an expensive home and carted off a large set of kitchen cabinets and appliances for use in our church basement kitchen. The "new" kitchen is really nice.
