We're finishing the basement and doing as much of the work ourselves as possible. We'd like to piggyback the basement cold air returns onto existing cold air returns on the main floor (i.e., run the duct work from an existing main-floor cold air return down the basement wall, and add another grate). Is this OK to do? We're more worried about code regulations than about air return efficiency. Thanks for any suggestions.

I'm relaying what my hubby says:
You can't tie the new return into the old one. The volume of cold air would be increased too much to do that. You have to run a new return. Most would tell you that it must be done in square duct, but round pipe will work fine. |
