I just bought and 80 yr old Art Deco house with carpeting in the living room and dining room. I pulled back the carpet to reveal pine flooring. There is a substrate and tongue in groove, 3" x 3/4", unfinished pine. Is this a worthwhile wood to refinish? I want to stain it dark. Close to black.

Pine is a beautiful wood but it is very soft and will dent/scar easily. Some people dislike that while others think it adds character.

Be aware that the darker you stain the more you will hide the natural grain of the wood, you will be able to see the dings easier and, if you go real dark, it will show every little piece of lint and dust.

Why refinish if you want it black? As stated pine is soft and will even show high heel marks but it is very pretty

What metwo said!

We pulled up old carpeting on a house built in the 30s and re-did the pine floors in a medium/light stain. It worked great for us because we wanted a rustic look, (and our four dogs certainly provided the "distressing") but if you are going for a dark polished deco look soft pine won't hold up to wear or abuse.

We had dark-stained heart of pine floors for 14 years. They did show dust, etc, but at their well-polished best, they were spectacular. We had a Sheltie to add to the the distressed patina. Every so often, I'd sit down with a jar of dark brown paint & small brush, and scoot over the floor doing touch-ups.

Over the years, the floors wore down somewhat, leaving the grain raised. We were a bit embarrassed about how it looked, until we learned that it was identical in appearance to the newest, most espensive look: Hand-Planed Wood!!
