I have an antique brass lamp on my piano that I want to spray paint. What do you recommend the kind of paint to use.

The lamp is very old and cannot be cleaned and it's very shiny. Do I need to do something to it before I spray paint it and how do you recommend me to do this project?

Sand all the areas you want to paint and use a spray paint for metals. Sanding it will rough up the surface and give the paint something to hang on to.

Are you planning on rewiring it?
The reason I ask is I have painted several lamps. The best way I have found is to take the lamp apart and sand the pieces you want to paint. Take a piece of string or twine, tie a popsicle stick or twig to one end, run the string through the piece(s) and suspend them from a tree branch or such. Set them slowly spinning then give them several light coats of spray paint. This is a great method for spray painting anything tubular.

If you don't want to take it apart or rewire it, cover any parts you don't want painted with masking tape and plastic bags or newspaper.

Hi,

Thank you so much for the good advice on spray painting my lamp. Was wondering if it needed sanded or not - and now I know.

I am not going to rewire it, but your idea of hanging the lamp from a tree branch, etc is an excellent idea. Can't wait to get started. Thanks again..

Hi Blondsense,

Just wanted you to know that I did spray my old lamp . . . and it really looks GREAT. I am impressed with it more now, than I was 42 years ago. Thanks for your help.
