Put a door in a Cantilever Bay Window Sign In/Join
Is it possible to put a door in a Cantilever Bay Window? We are considering adding a door to a bay window that will lead to a new patio but we're not sure if that is possible. Does anyone know what typical city code would require if it is possible? I'm worried about the need to add concrete supports under the window. How would you dig the holes with such little clearance. Anyone ever done anything like this? The contractor that I typically use is not sure, he's never done it before.

You can't attach a deck to the cantilevered bay but I see no reason why you couldn't put a door in it. You're going to need stairs down to the patio, if wooden they might need to be free standing.

Caveat - your local codes office can tell you for sure.

Any advice given here is general in nature and is not necessarily valid for your given area. If in doubt check with your local codes enforcement department for what is required when doing electrical, plumbing or structural work on your house. Permits may or may not be required in your area and home owners may not be able to DIY some tasks. I have no way of knowing if you have the skills needed to complete the tasks you are asking about, when in doubt seek professional assistance.

My advice may be worth exactly what you pay me for it. :-) For the record I did not stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

You could for sure put a door in there. You might want to find a door that fits the existing rough opening that the window sits it. Obviously are going to need some stairs or extend that deck over.
FYI- We too are in the Chicago area!
