i live in an apartment building. the air conditioners are built into the wall. i need to insulate them inside so the cold air doesn't blow through. last year i wrapped it with a plastic garbage bag and then covered it with a insulated quilt batting and duct taped it all around. it was okay but still cold. the complex has put covers on the outside but it doesn't shield us completely from the cold air. i am looking for suggestions for this year.

You have done about all you can do! One step further is to make your own insulated box to fit over the inside. The most complicated part will be a soft "boot" to fit snugly against the wall.

Building on Bob's suggestion:
Quilt batting will hold moisture to some extent (and thus not be great insulation). I would use some heavier plastic (than trash bags) and then attempt an inside "box affair" that used rigid foam insulation and securely tape all edges/corners that meet. Then you could also drape/sew an actual quilt fabric over the whole thing to disguise it a bit.
If you can squeeze a heavy wire from the inside to outside beside the unit, and loop it around the unit, you may be able to possibly draw the "box" back snug to the inside wall, in this way?

oh boy! um hmm. maybe i could fashion something like a styrofoam box instead of wood. i have a lot of bubble wrap too. maybe i could wrap it with that.

one good thing here is we don't have to pay for heat so u just watch it go right out thru the vents! :eek

Even if your heat is paid, drafts are really not comfortable, when it is cold. Good luck on your project.
