We just moved into a townhouse that has a brick fireplace with a brick hearth upstairs and a stove sitting on a large brick pad downstairs. What is the easiest way to clean brick and mortar? Also, is there kind of treatment or paint on glaze, sealant or anything that will make the brick look better or brighter?

TSP cleans bricks good. But it is a very harsh cleaner so make sure you wear a good set of gloves.
I have also heard that a mixture of 50% boiled linseed oil and 50% mineral spirts will bring back the color of brick, though I have never tried it myself. If I was to try it, I would try it on a brick in an inconspicuous spot. |
