I am wanting to replace the flooring in my kitchen and laundry room. I was thinking of tile and then hopefully in the future put hardwood in the living and dinning room but the shows I have seen have wood floors going throughout the house. I don't want the floors to clash if I do put tile and then hardwood. Any oppinions and adive would be great!

I think wood and tile look fine together...but I prefer the look of all wood.

For some people (including me) standing on tile for long periods of time causes fatigue and pain in their feet and legs. Grout lines can be tough to keep clean.

If the laundry room isn't real visible from other rooms you might go ahead with the tile in there.

Most people do not recommend hardwood (or even wood laminate) in areas like the kitchen and laundry room because of potential water damage.

My wood laminate flooring completely buckled underneath my washer due to a small leak we didn't know about. Frown

However, tile is hard & cold and the grout is scratchy on the feet. But it stands up to kitchen abuse very well.

I suppose there are always positives & negatives to every decision! If you do decide to go with tile though, I don't think it would clash with the wood flooring in the living area.

Apparently no one likes vinyl anymore.. but that's exactly what I just put in the kitchen.
I didn't want the potential problems due to inevitable leaks etc.and groutes hard to keep looking nice. I put in vinyl by mannington that looks like slate. Close enough for me.

We are rebuilding and I am in the process of choosing kitchen flooring so I was thinking about linoleum that looked like tile!

I actually liked my old linoleum flooring better than the wood laminate in my kitchen because it hid dirt, was so easy to clean, and was completely noiseless. My wood laminate showed every particle of dirt and made a loud clacking sound every time we walked on it in heels (even though we got the thicker pad than the standard one).

If the OP finds photos of vinyl tile or linoleum next to wood flooring that looks nice and not completely absurd-looking, please let me know! Smile I'm trying to decide the very same thing....

It's personal preference. I have all hardwood throughout my whole first floor including my kitchen and one of my bathrooms. We had hardwood throughout the house I grew up in including the kitchen and bathrooms and the house is over 100 yrs old never had any problems w/the wood floors.

Only one friend of mine that had cheap laminate wood floors in her house had to deal w/buckling etc from water damage. No one that I know of personally have had any problems w/their hardwood floors in their kitchens and baths.

If you like tile then use tile, if you like linoleum then use linoleum if you like wood then use wood. It's a matter of personal taste and a look you are trying to achieve. I used wood in the kitchen and bath for two reasons, one wood is the only flooring I like and two it makes the house look bigger by having all the same flooring.

I have wood throughout my whole house -- except -- for the kitchen where I have porcelain tile. I love wood floors, but I decided to tile the kitchen floor for a bit of contrast. And I do love the contrast, although just in one room and the kitchen is in the back of the house, just off the dining room. Somehow, this porcelain feels good on my feet, but I also wear soft slippers in my home. With the warm weather, I've been barefoot in the kitchen because it feels so cool.

My wood is medium oak and the tile is a creamy off white with beige and brown toned veins running through it. I like it!
