Hey fellow diyers, I have a bedroom on the third floor and I would like to remove one of the windows, replace it with french doors and have them open out onto a small balcony. I am wondering if anyone out there has done the same thing.

I haven't, a neighbor in my first townhouse had the house built with one. The pressure treated floor joists went far into the house and it had no posts to hold it up. As I recall it was about 6' deep and the floor joists probably went at least that far into the house to allow the elimination of the posts. I don't know whether you could build one that way today as this was over 20 years ago and deck codes have been changed significantly over the years due to a lot of deck collapses from poorly designed decks.
Otherwise you're just adding a deck very high off the ground and you'll probably need a set of engineered approved plans for this balcony. I would start with your town code inspection department for what you'll need to pull a permit, as I'm certain you'll need one. "Pain is temporary, quitting lasts for ever." Lance Armstrong |
