We are in northern CA and in the process of replacing our front door. I am simply replacing our nice solid wood door with an entry door with windows so our front room will not be so dark.

Any help/suggestions/input appreciated! I am used to just paining and doing a little deorating with accessories so help from you remodeling experts would be super! Smile

If your questions was fiberglass verses steel, the answer is easy, fiberglass. Fiberglass won't dent or rust like a steel door and with the wood graining is easier to get a good looking paint job then on a smooth steel door.

Your choice comes down to style, though unless you're going for a look that is only available in wood I'd probably lean towards the fiberglass door. If you want the door stained, definitely go for the wood though. I haven't had much luck with getting a finish to hold up on fiberglass other than paint. Sikkens makes a clear top coat that is supposed to hold up, but I've never tried it. Regular poly and marine poly will fail on a fiberglass door that is exposed to the sun.

If you're painting it I'd probably go fiberglass unless you can't get the design you want in a fiberglass door.

A fiberglass door won't expand and contract as much (if at all) with the seasons and changes in humidity. Though I'm not sure your humidity in Northern CA changes all that much season to season.
