I live in an older home with painted stairs. I want to repaint them. I was told in the DIY store to sand the sine off of the old paint to make sure the new paint bonds well.... The stairs are old and warn and dented. How much of the shine has to come off to get a good cover with the new paint?????? HELP!!
Just lightly sand all over to abrade the surface to provide better adhesion of new paint. Scrub well with degreaser and rinse to remove all soil that may interfere with adhesion.
If your painting the treads make sure you use a oil base porch and deck paint for floors, otherwise you'll be repainting in a few years. I would also use a oil base primer.
