I bought a desk at an antique shop to match a dresser I have. However, the desk needs to be repainted because it needs a little touching up and it's more yellow than the dresser (which is more of a white or antique white color). What type of paint should I use to paint this desk? I went to Lowes and was overwhelmed with all of the options. Also, both pieces have gold trim. What kind of paint should I use to go back and do the gold trim on the desk after I paint it? Thanks!

This is a situation where a professional paint supply store is probably a better resource than a paint department in another store?
I've always had good advice by taking in a drawer or door front and asking advice at a local Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore paint store. They can look at, and possibly do a simple test to see what type of paint and surface you have to cover, so they can recommend a successful prep and the right products for you. (A primer, if needed and a great enamel top coat.) Some finishes are best if coated with a final clear coat too.

If you can carry in a sample drawer of the dresser you want to match, they can better help match some paint for you too?

There are also some small bottles of decent acrylic metalics available at craft stores for matching the gold trim.

    Thanks for the advice!

I'm trying not to spend too much money on this project, so that's the reason I had gone to Lowes to get an enamel paint instead of a professional store. I was just thrown off by the amount of different kinds of paint (semi-gloss, etc.)

I'm toying with the idea of painting the dresser as well, and if I do that I won't need an exact match, just something along the same lines. I still haven't decided yet, though.

    Thanks again for your help!
