Painting Story: "Hurricane Katrina and our feeding tent" Sign In/Join
posted
In October of 2005, right after hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, a group of people from our church began going down to the town of Pass Christian, MS to do disaster relief. We were able to once a month for most every month up until 2 or 3 months ago when our work ended. We logged in 40 something trips and were always comprised of mostly college students and 2 or 3 older adults who were very dedicated to finishing a job that many had long forgotten about.

On our 2nd trip down, we met a business man in a feeding tent there who was trying to get his house back together from the damage it took. Eventually this incredible man and his family opened their home to our group of volunteers every single month. We stayed with them, they housed and fed us. They gave us a key to come and go. They were much of the reason we could even continue the work in the area because they provided our lodging and food.

We are making our last trip down there in a week and half and we wanted to have a portrait painted for this dear family. He is a great lover of art. He also loves his town of Pass Christian dearly so we chose a picture which shows his town and the site from the feeding tent where we first met him.
