We are painting the fake wood cabinets in the kitchen of our manufactured home.This is a fix to last a few years until we decide if we are going to sell or stay and gut the kitchen and put in all new real wood cabinets.

We are comfortable in how we are painting the cabinets, we've already painted the bathroom cabinets with success.

However, in the kitchen the hardware needs to be painted in order to match the new color. At this time we are on a budget and want to paint the hinges and handles and reuse them.

I've used Rustoleum Hammered on light fixtures and been very pleased with the results. I'd like to use it on the kitchen hardware.

Will this work and be durable? I'll appreciate any suggestions on technique and the type of paint to use.

I found the Rustoleum website to be very helpful and a rep called me back in a couple of days to better answer my questions about painting our kitchen hardware.
The solid brass knobs and cup drawer pulls as well as all the hinges and screws were what I painted. Rigging up some sort of spray box/booth in the garage can work well. Hanging hinges from string or wire made getting all surfaces easier and poking the screws into a cardboard box lid was helpful for holding them.

I used their primer (excellent and very sticky) on the cleaned and dry metals, and then immediately sprayed 2-3 coats of a cream color spray enamel paint (to match the cabinet doors/drawers). Everything held up well for several years, (some of the knobs were not as smooth or had some scrapes after that) So I did end up replacing the knobs with the same color porcelain finish.

My daughter painted hers with Oil Rubbed Bronze Rustoleum two years ago. They are holding up well.

I believe Dacia on the decorating board mounted her hardware on a cardboard box to spray paint them. Give a yell out to her - she shared some great "how=tos" when she painted her cabinets.

I know Dacia- remember her posts when she painted her cabinets- wish I had thought to message her-darn it!

We are about to go and get paint for them. We've decided to spray them with primer then with a rustoleum spray paint. I'll decide on which one when we get to the store.

I plan to post make over pics on the decorating board when we've finished in a few weeks- thanks for the advice !

i did exactly what you are thinking of 4 years ago in my manufactured home. I found handles for a very reasonable price and ended up just using the Rustoleum hammered finish on the hinges. I didn't prime them first. I scrubbed them with vinegar and steel wool and just painted away.
We sold the house 2 years later and they still looked great.

It's been 10 years since we painted the bathroom vanity in what was then the kids bath. It hasd held up well. So I have high hopes for the kitchen cabinets! Didn't paint the hardware though.

He painted the hardware yesterday and put the doors back on today. They look great- hope they are durable! That was the top cabinets- now he needs to do the bottom ones the same way. I'm going to get brave and paint my countertops when he finishes the cabinets. The mauve sticks out like a sore thumb with the new white cabinets. The entire house had the 90s color scheme of mauve and hunter green. When the countertops get painted it will be gone!
