Hi All, I'm new here and was wondering if I could get some suggestions. I've been put in charge of freshening up the house for the spring from the Boss (my wife) So far I've completed two bathrooms and a family room. I'm working on the kitchen now, but will soon move onto the bedroom. This is where I can use some help. I've got vaulted ceilings in the BR. I'd like to know if painting the ceiling (Top Flat Portion)a lighter color and the slanted portion would accentuate the ceiling hight and make the room look more open.

    Any thought's would be appreciated.

    Hi ScreamerUSA,

The slanted portion should be painted the same color as the walls if you want the room to feel "taller". Leave the ceiling the lightest color.

But... if you want the room to feel cozier, which you may want in a bedroom... paint the ceiling "flat part" and the slanted part a darker color.

Do you have colors in mind? Your house is so cute! A traditional looking Tudor, I think.

    Hi Debra,

Thanks for the prompt reply,it's appreciated.

As you can see, the room is all white now. Not very exciting. The new rug is black, w/ a floral pattern: Gold, Blues, Reds (various tones)...
I will most likely pick a color out of the rug and was intending to do an accent wall behind the bed. The rest of the room will be a cream / neutral or a darker earth tone.

It's not written in stone, so I'll have to decide on what I'm doing w/ the ceiling.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah, it'sa traditional tudor. We love this place.

It looks like your room has a skylight... and lots of light streaming in. So the only time the room will feel cozy is a night. The pictures hanging on the walls are feminine and the rug is probably feminine even if the colors are strong.

So your looking for paint colors that going to give your room a luxurious feel! And... warm it up! The colors must look good with lots of daylight hitting the walls and nice at night with warm lighting.

    Are the floors wood?

Using a warm gold (similar to the gold in the dining room picture) will fit both of these criteria. If you have wood floors... then the gold is not the best choice. Using a very natural green is probably a better choice.

When choosing colors... choose the focal wall color first. Then we will choose the other wall color to compliment.

If it were me... ;0) I would get a quart of several focal wall colors and paint a large square of each on the actual walls. Leave it there for several days... and critique it in different light... different times of the day and at night. This will give you the best view of how the color will change during a 24 hour period.

It's amazing how color can be affected by different lighting... and you need to choose wisely! (I must have heard that in a movie)

    Keep me posted!

    Thanks Debra,

All good suggestions. This project is a few weeks off since I need to finish the kitchen; I'll have some time to review colors.

    I'll keep you posted.

    Thanks,

Hi, I've uploaded a pic of my BR carpet. Could you suggest a color to pull from here for the focal wall (behind the bed) and the secondary walls?

    HI,
It's going to be difficult for you to find just the right color... but I would go to the paint store and pick up a bunch of paint strips that you think will match the "green" in the leaves.

The green is a very warm sage green. When you find several paint colors that you think will look good... get a quart of each one... just 2 or 3... you don't want too many choices.

Then try the wall test with each of those colors.

Green is a great choice for a bedroom. Even though your living room has very cool colors... most of your home reflects warmer colorations.

If you are keeping the white furniture in your bedroom... let me know... because that throws an entire new twist to choosing colors for this room.

    Hi Derba,

Mush thanks for the interest in my project. As you can see, the creme color dressers are here to stay, along w/ my black built-in closet and the black soffits that conceal the pink flouresant dimable lights. I also have a brass bed.

My wife likes your idea of painting the focal wall behind the bed goldish or a hue of blue (hard to see in the rug. Thing is, I want this room to be a real showpiece and I'm not in a rush to just jump into something I'll regret.

I'll do a search of the Millikan Website to try and get a clear/clean pic of the rug.

Thanks again, You've been a great inspiration.

Perhaps If I send you a more detailed / cleaned pic of the rug, would this help?

At the rate I'm moving, my kitchen "should be done in three weeks or so, then it on to up the stairs to the Master BR

See... I'm glad I asked about the furniture. Your home is traditional in design... so I am often influenced by that.

But... the interior design elements in some rooms are very contemporary, such as the Living Room.

    The master bedroom will have
    • White Modern Furniture
    • Victorian Brass Bed
    • Traditional Carpet/Rug
    • Modern Black soffits and Sky Lights

This bedroom will most likely need to be addressed as contemporary. So we need to take our cues from your living room if you love how that turned out.

Tell us your thoughts on the contemporay vs. traditional. decorating.

    Hi,

Before the bedroom furniture was "ALL" black laminate. I thought I could soften it up by adding a brass bed. There is no way to remove the soffits since they conceal pink flouresant (SP?) lighting.
I feel the pictures on the wall warm it up a bit also. Whatdaya think?

I was hoping to use color to dress up and tranform the room rsather then start tearing it apart Wink

I'll go over to the BM dealer and look for strips simillar to the prominent colors in the carpet. Perhaps this will help me get an idea of where to start.

Debra, thanks again for thr time you've invested in my project, it's very much appreciated.
