We'd like to paint my daughter's bathroom in wide hot pink and white vertical stripes. How do we go about this? Do we have to paint the whole room one color, and then add the stripes? How do we make sure the stripes are straight and the paint doesn't bleed? Thanks!

if the room gets everyday use from sprays, oils, etc., I would suggest to prime it first, then use a good quality eggshell or satin(in the white you are talking about) for your base coat allover(2 finish coats); then proceed to decide on the width of the desired stripes you are wanting to use; measure with a laser level or 4ft. ruler- make small tick marks down the wall of the measurements with an water soluble or erasing pencil; use low tack delicate 2080 blue painter's tape(orange core center) and run the tape down the edges of your tick marks.

Burnish the edge lines of the tape really really good. You can seal the inside edges of the tape with your (white) base paint, let dry and then paint your hot pink for the stripes.

Instead of masking tape, blue or otherwise, I use a piece of straight scrap wood, and one of those painting edgers with wheels. I just hold the wood along where I want/need the "line", and run the edger down the wood. I get a straight line, with no bleeding, and no tape to remove peel off later.
