My DH's grandmother gave us her old veneer headboard and dresser. I am not crazy about it but it means a lot to DH. Both pieces have a very musty odor and needs a little refinishing on the headboard. Has anyone every revived this type of furniture? How do I rid it of the musty odor and do an overall cleaning? There is also some of the veneer on the headboard that has loosened up a little, how do I work with this? Thanks for your help

I have a great technique if you want the item to be really dark wood color. My hubby and I have done this with several veneer items. First sand lightly. Then spray with the primer that looks kinda dark terra cotta color. After that dries then spray with flat black. Start at the edges first and cover well but work your way to the inside leaving the center (how much is up to you) lighter so that the primer shows a little. Then we use spray polyurathane and very very lightly brush with long strokes to blend and make the part of the primer that is showing look like wood grain. This is a great contemporary look. We have gotten lots of complements on the items that we have done.
As for the musty smell you could try setting the items out in the sun. Take out drawers and lay dresser on its back so that the sun can shine on the inside. Wipe it down on the inside and in drawers with maybe lysol or a mix of clorox and water?

Think I remember something about putting containers of fresh (UN-brewed) coffee grounds in drawers to get rid of odors.
