I wondered if any of you have tried Home Depot's Fresh Aire brand paint (which is made by a company called ICI). Is it the same quality as other better paints? If not, which is your favorite low VOC/chemical-smelling toxin paint? Can Home Depot dye Fresh Aire paint a Ralph Lauren color since Fresh Aire is limited in their color selection? thanks! Smile

Ralph-Lauren has been a low-VOC paint for some time now...50g/L.

The Fresh-Aire paint uses pre-measured powdered colorant packets. This doesn't translate into color-matching ability however. Just not possible yet using a colorant system like that.

Odors and VOC's have nothing to do with each other!
* Zinsser 123 is a good primer...VOC=100g/L.
* C2-One...its competitor primer...VOC=200g/L.

I can't stand the smell of 123!! I won't use it!
The C2 primer...I hardly smell it at all. Very pleasant to use!!

Here's a link to a Popular Mechanics article comparing a few brands including Frsh Aire.

Doesn't ICI own the Ralph Lauren label now? So, basically its all ICI (formerly Glidden).
For a paint to be low VOC the EPA has set the requirement to 50g/l. C2 now has LoVo which is at about 25. Sherwin Williams also has a harmony line that is low voc and is low in odor. Remember, low VOC, or low-odor, or both, does not automatically translate to high quality. You need the combination of all 3.

Thanks to all three of you. From my research it sounds as though Mystic paint is the way to go with no voc's, amazing color selection, and supposedly good quality. The major drawback is that there are very few retailers and you need to order online. This seems like an incredible pain to me. So, for this small job I'm going to try out Fresh Aire and then, hopefully, by the time we build our next home these things will all be ironed-out. Oh, and to answer your question about ICI: yes, they do own Ralph Lauren and Fresh Aire. I'll let you all know of my thoughts on its quality once I use it.

Kind of a "sideways" update here...

ICI will cease as a "separate name" now.
* Akzo-Nobel (huge world-wide conglomerate in coatings, etc.) finalized their takeover of ICI/Glidden this spring.
* We've had notice this spring through ICI/Ralph-Lauren too.
* Now...when I order RL paint...they don't reference "ICI" anymore!
* Akzo-Nobel makes the VERY popular Sikkens line of Deck/House stains.
* I learned who makes Mythic Paints recently, and was QUITE surprised!!

Ok I'll bite Faron.....who DOES make Mythic? ICI?!?! Eek Big Grin

RL paint is the worst I have ever used...beautiful colors but every thing that ever touched the wall left a permanent mark/stain.... Roll Eyes Frown

I was just reading some guys review on FreshAire NOT being nontoxic and he was rambling on about the vinyl ingredients and think crystilline silica or something or other..LOL there are so many "better" options popping out and it is so hard to evaluate...

Ace makes Mythic - at least for now.

There is no such thing as "non-toxic" paint in spite of the ridiculous claims made otherwise.

FreshAire is just as "non-toxic" as other 0 VOC products out there. Drink any latex paint and I assure you, you are going to have some gastric distress.

Keep in mind that crystalline silica is only an issue if dust is inhaled, it doesn't emit anything. TiO2 also falls into this category and is in virtually every bucket of paint made (it makes paint white and provides most of the hide)

Really? Hmmmm....I looked up Southern Diversified and they also list American Pride as their line which makes same exact statement as Mythic...when I click to shop online the AP page takes me to mythic.....

LOL Paintguy....I am not ingesting the stuff just want the least offgassing during application and after....and of course still want a bit of wear and washability factored in. My DH loves to sand the heck out of things and without a mask you can bet he is inhaling something nasty let alone it entering my homes dust to be inhaled later by others....so if I can avoid the silica the better IMHO. American Pride says their no voc paint was developed for the Pentagon who wanted no offgassing....I find that rather amusing..... Cool

Which brings up a question..IS it necessary to sand semigloss on trim to repaint? Is there a greener solution to avoid the sanding process and dust? THANKS PAINTGUY!!! Big Grin

AP and Mythic are indeed one in the same. Both Mythic and FreshAire are low emitting products.

No, you don't need to sand but there needs to be something for the new coating to "bite" into. A good scuffing with a scotchbrite pad will do the trick or you can wet-sand as well. Basically, you need to knock the sheen off a bit.

Tell your husband to wear the dustmask!

Sikkens or Akzo-Nobel also now owns Flood (makers of floetrol, cwf stains, etc.)

GreenAlice: You can also try a liquid de-glosser too instead of sanding.
And so everyone knows, any true 0 VOC paint would fall right off the wall. Companies are allowed to say 0 VOC because they are under the testing limits. Problem to fix: EPA needs better testing procedures developed.

Well in any case less VOC's are better for offgassing and their stinkiness factor....will have to check out liquid deglossers...wonder if any are eco friendly or voc free... Big Grin and what is WET sanding?

Not really. Odor is not a definite link to low VOC.
