I am redecorating my kitchen. My backsplashes and soffits had wallpaper which I have removed. Under the wallpaper was formica on most of the walls and one short section has paneling. The formica covers paneling (what were these people thinking?) which runs on all the walls under the cabinets. My soffits have moulding on top and bottom so I am limited to paper that is 9". It also is paneled. All the paneling is oak - not that fake wood paneling. My kitchen and family room are one long room. Last fall we had the paneling removed in the family room and a small section of kitchen - those walls are painted a beautiful soft green. Cabinets are golden oak - all 40' of them on 3 walls. Golden oak may not be in, but I love them. Countertops are white and gray corian.
So, should I paint the backsplashes and soffits? Should I wallpaper both or one or the other? Should I spackle over the grooves in the paneling? Help! Suggestions on colors? Coordinating green? Soft yellow? Gold blends in too much with the cabinet color.
I see that you did not get a response. Do you have a digital camera to post a pic on General Dec? It would help to be able to "see" what you are talking about. If you wallpaper, I would spackle over the grooves for sure. If you paint, I would leave the grooves there. Sounds like a different shade of green that coordinates would be nice.
Gardening Rule: When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. Elaine
My new countertops are (finally) being installed Tuesday. I'll try to post a photo (if I can figure out how) when they get put in. The paper I had previously was put over the grooved paneling, and you could not see the grooves, so I have no worries papering over them again. BTW, my name is also Elaine and I lived in Iowa all my life until about 16 years ago. It's a great state to be from .
