My kitchen island is oak and I am planning to paint it black satin sheen finish. Is there a particular paint brand I should use to get a good finish?

Oak has a course grain and not a good candidate for paint as the grain will show through.

Both Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams make a wonderful cabinet paint that glides on beautifully. We have used the BM version on more than one oak kitchen with fantastic results. The key is prep, the appropriate primer and sanding between coats. Read this article if you are interested in what professional painters are using.

I would start with a self-leveling primer to somewhat fill in the grain. Sherwin-Williams makes one as does/did Ralph Lauren, if you can still find it.
