I have a cedar Armoire and it had a varnish finish at one time. over the years and several moves it has lost its shine and has a few scratches. How do I get that shine and repair the scratches .Do they make a marker in that color?
Yes, they make markers it seems in anything. Just look at the store usually where the stains are.
You can get the shine back but you would have to determine the finish first. I know you said varnish but that is usually a generic term. There are pages on the Internet that sY how to do this. I keep forgetting. Sorry.
I can't help with the refinishing but please don't cover the inside with paint/varnish/poly. Give it a light sanding and the cedar smell will come back.
Shellac was a common exterior finish on old cedar chests and closets, and it's transparency turned slightly amber as it cured. And as mentioned, sanding the raw interior wood will often renew the original cedar scent.
thanks to all of you, I was thinking of Shellac but could not come up with the word. I appreciate all the help.
