Can I put a crackle medium on wood then add top coat of paint? I would like to attain the effect of cracked paint and see the wood underneath rather than another color on an old chest.

The only way I know this might work is to first paint the piece with a latex paint that simulates the wood color/tone of the chest. The latex (rubber in the paint) is what helps create the crackle finish you are apparently looking for.

I did that on an old shelf. The wood was dark and it shows thru the white crackle finish.

alibaba did you do anything special to prep the wood before doing the crackle? Besides sanding?
