My DH is taking down the wallpaper in a bedroom. The next project is to paint this room. However, we are having problems with some of the walls. The walls are plastered walls (house built in 79) and were primed and painted back then. So as he is taking the wallpaper off, the paint and primer are peeling off as well in many areas.
What do we do now to prepare these uneven areas for future painting? And another question, why would this have happened? Five years or more had gone by before that room was papered. Thank you for any advice. |

You will have to sand/feather out where the pieced of paint came off, if there are areas that are really deep then you will have to fill those you can use that already mixed stuff can't think of the name of it right now (which is bad I just used it upstairs).
It could have happened if you painted with oil base paint over latex paint. Or it could have been a glossy first coat of paint then a non glossy second coat unless the surface was sanded non glossy paint won't stick to glossy etc. ________________________ *My Home Improvement site http://www.geocities.com/dio_doing_it_ourselves/index.htm |

Hi, bean! Thanks for responding. This room was only painted one time, satin latex paint over a latex primer. We used Sherwin Wms paint.
~If you can read this, thank a teacher.~ |

The paint is getting peeled-off because there was apparently no sizing, or "wallpaper-primer" applied b4 paper went up.
Over that many years, the glue just gets "fused" with the paint, resulting in paint release from the wall. No choice but to keep going with paper-removal! * Sand and rinse off all the glue you can, down to a sound layer of paint. * When fully dry, apply a coat of Gardz from Zinsser. This locks down all the paper edges, old glues, etc. * Then hire someone to skimcoat the room, or shoot new texture on. * Prime again!!! * Now you're ready -at last- to paint!! Sorry! There's just no way to "sugar-coat" this!! Faron |
