We have a front door that is painted black on the exterior side and I like the look of brown.. Can I paint over the black color with a solid color stain in brown or should I just paint a dark brown?

Inquire at a pro paint store for the best advice? But if you already have paint (not a solid color stain), then you are stuck either stripping it off to apply the dark brown stain or if it is paint on the door now, then use a primer and paint over.

I think the paint is probably your answer, and get what the paint store recommends for the best coverage, durability and lasting color.
