We have a hardwood floor in the kitchen/breakfast area. I put those little (felt) pads on the bottoms of the chair and table legs. They would only last a few weeks before scraping off. The bare legs were gouging the floors, so in desperation I switched to black rubber "cups" for the bottoms of the chairs. Now there are black rubber streaks all over the floor. Is there any way to remove these unsightly black smudges without refinishing?

I'd try goo-gone.

Has anyone ever heard of getting down on your hands and knees with a tennis ball and rubbing the tennis ball on the smudges. My wife has been told that it works. Plan to try it this weekend.

I have used a pencil eraser on black marks and I have used the rubber part of the toe of a tennis shoe to rub out the marks. It is a "get down on your knees" job like Carney2 says.
