I just read an article that Whirlpool has come up with a hot new finish for its appliances called White Ice and it's expected to be the newest of the new finishes. I've been longing to redo our kitchen but didn't want to commit to Stainless Steel b/c of the finger print issue, although I love the look. Since it has been around a while now I knew there had to be something new coming out just around the corner. Whirlpool likened it to the white finish on the apple iphone which I have and I love. It's not that I feel I have to have the newest of anything just to be "in fashion" but I do have to like what I spend my ** on, and this white finish seems to be just the perfect choice for me!

I saw the new finish called White Ice, and it's very nice, but it would not work in my current kitchen because of the color of my cabinets, floors and overall design scheme. Stainless works best for me.

For others, the White Ice finish may be just the ticket. It's sleek and contemporary; I can see it in a really modern kitchen, with glossy white IKEA flat front cabinets. YUM!

It's great we all have a choice of materials and finishes for our kitchens, so many more than before.

Stainless steel is not going anywhere. For those who don't like it, there are many other options available. But, look carefully: there is stainless steel trim on the new White Ice finish! :>)

Stainless was never 'in' for me. Didn't think I wanted it. Then while visiting stepson noticed someone had wiped his stainless refrigerator "against the grain" and scratched it. Sealed the deal for me.

I had avocado green in the 1970s and it lasted until I remarried and moved in 1997 and sold the house to the last renters in 2004!!! DANG buying GOOD stuff to start with.

I have white appliances now. No worries.

I have never liked the look or cleaning stainless steel.
I'm all white too...I can add color in other places and change it out more often that way than having buy new appliances.
But I guess I'm not normal anyway cause I don't like granite counter tops either...too much work. I'll keep my old style that I just wipe & go!

saw the handles are stainless which is just enough..and alot easier to clean than traditional white...dd2 has stainess, inncluding a cook top which has scratched with continual cleaning...

and another is the french door fridge...i'm sure it's just me, but dd2's seems so cluttered?

Karen and Sherry, this makes three of us who like the white appliances!! And I don't care for granite countertops either. Could probably be talked into the quartz ones, though. My style is just about 180 degrees from sleek and contemporary.

LOL No granite here either! I went with solid surface (like Corian) but could possibly be talked into quartz except I doubt there will ever be a need to change again.

Ahem - I have added Empire Red Kitchenaide small appliances just recently - still need to replace the white blender. So much for a "change it to any color I want" kitchen. Have you seen the red Viking range? OH MY GOODNESS. Sigh. I can dream can't I?!

So stainless steel is on the way "out"? LOL

Probably because they have maxed the market on that particular trend and sold all the products possible for now - so on to the next one!

Seriously, I grew up with mostly white, avocado came around a bit later and harvest gold when I got married. A few years later, it was almond - have to say I really did like that almond but it didn't last long.

Now, I have black and nothing will make me waver from it - it's classic, compliments my cabinets and it won't matter if I change the entire color scheme of my "open-floor plan," the black will always look good.

PS. And no designer on a tv network will ever convince me otherwise!

I honestly thought I was the last one on the planet to love, love my white appliances and not go with stainless...nor granite!

DH had black when we married...it was in the house when he bought it. I didn't hate it...but I like white better.

I don't like black appliances at all. To me, they're like black holes sucking the life out of a room. Besides, they're a royal pain to keep clean.

I hate the black and the stainless, reminds me of school cafeterias.I have bisque or off white. I did see some striking electric blue and some hot red colors.They reminded me of enamel nail color. I really like them, but I wonder if you could use just the stove in that bright color and off white fridge and dishwasher. I would then use some of that color in a glass back splash! Dreaming here.

I have not found fingerprints to be an issue with my stainless steel appliances. In fact, I find them much easier to keep clean than I did my white appliances which I was always after with Jublilee Kitchen Wax. Does anyone else mourn the passing of that great product?

My white has a "no finger print" finish...and it only takes a damp rag or paper towel to get anything off it.
I don't care for black either.
I like my kitchen to be LIGHT...that's one reason I have VERY bright gold walls in there!

I remember Jubilee it was a great product! I had white appliances my whole life so I like something different. I have a black refrigerator in the garage--scratch and dent sale and I had a black dishwasher. I love my ss refrigerator, double ovens and dishwasher. They are easy to clean with a spray from the manufacturer and they look great. There are options for everyone to enjoy and make their home right for them.

I started married life with white, then went to Coppertone (loved the look, hated the fingerprints), next came almond, and now I'm back to white--and that's what it'll be from here on out.

I used Jubilee for years on my refrigerators. Fingerprints aren't a problem on my current textured white refrigerator.

A few years ago one of the mfg. announced that they were coming out with a dark finish...Ohhhh I am having a senior moment here. That finish that was often seen in kitchen faucets (if they weren't chrome/brushed nickel). Anyway, apparently the designers didn't get the memo because I have not seen them in any ads or anything.

So now they try for Ice white. Hey, you can't blame the mfg for trying to drum up business!!

I am another white person but I do like the almond/bisque. Seemed to fit in well with wood cabinets without any upkeep problems or being too trendy.

Don't you with SS and granite get tired of seeing your kitchen on every Tv show and magazine?

I have both SS and granite. My kitchen island granite is very different and I have never seen it on any show. It has lots of movement--waves of color in it. Some people prefer the same surface throughout the kitchen. I like the fact that each granite slab is unique.

Add me to the not stainless group. I have all white appliances. We've been in our house 22 years, and the kitchen is screaming at me to redo it. I've about decided I have to do granite for resale value, but refuse to go stainless.

I get so tired of Househunters, when all they want is granite and stainless. And two sinks in the bathroom.

Oh my yes! I see no need for two side-by-side sinks. Unless you have a 12' long vanity and you can put 8' between them. Really...does anyone stand side by side with their spouse and brush their teeth, tweeze eyebrows, check that zit with him/her standing right there too?

Stepson and his wife have a master bath with two sinks on opposite sides of the room. That would work for me. His junk over there...mine here...on BOTH sides of the sink. Works for me!

Well, I'm the oddball that loves two sinks in the bathroom. Don't know if I could go back to having just one. They don't have to be side by side, but definitely two of them. We're showering and getting dressed at the same time way too much to have it any other way.

FFG, not sure how we went from talking about stainless to the debate re two sinks but you are definitely not an oddball; if so count me in!

As most everyone knows, dh and I lived in a wonderful old farm house that was 1006 sf for 28 years and made do quite well; then bought this place - those two sinks are like a dream! Love being able to have a clean sink first thing in the morning without having to scrub out the remainders of whiskers and such!

LOL I'm out of bed, ready for work, out the door, sitting at my desk - before DH is ever out of bed. Besides - this is one man who's DM raised/reared him right. Three boys in a row...they cleaned their room, IRONED THEIR OWN CLOTHES, did other "domestic" chores including cleaning the bathroom sink.

Will personally never again opt for stainless appliances, but I do like the easy care of a quality, stainless steel sink.

I do have the white kitchen sink and I am very happy with it. I did have ss sinks in other homes and liked that too. The white needs to be bleached out every week, but that is what I clean with anyhow. The two sinks in the baths I find silly. if I am in there, I am in there alone and if dh is in there, I opt to never go near there!

Add me to the 'I hate stainless steel and granite counter tops group'. They are both so dated and ugly!

Being in my "mumble mumble" 60's---I have to say I've seen it all come & go but the only color I won't have in my kitchen is avacado green because the year I married (1962) it was on, and in everything.
I love white appliances but somehow ended up with gold refrigerator (yr I bought it white was extra) and my dishwasher has panels so I can change the color if I want to do it but it matches so I don't care.

When we moved into this old house (built around 1850) we had SLATE kitchen sink (live in slate belt of PA) and it was from 1920 ear--sigot had HOT, COLD, CITY water on it--3 choices! They thought city water might make it up here I guess.
We live about 15 miles out of ALlentown PA.
I wonder if that spigot is an antique!!???

ANYWAY--that SLATE sink (and broken dishes dropped on it) cured me of stone anything in the kitchen including tile floors (ceramic or stone)--hard on arthritic knees).

Sunday's newpaper Labor Day sales: RED washers & dryers: yuk!
SS appliances on sale at a deep discount. IMO same complaints: most are inferior quality merchanise thus a fading fad.
Black will be IN again eventually - my guess is 5 years or less
Who cares what's "IN"? buy what appeals to you! quality first, without going into debt!
Decorators & marketing folk claim white is IN again = sheesh! ICE is newest strategy to market basic "refrigerator white".

grins Marcy! never avacado or harvest gold appliances, or turquoise! because when first married hand-me-down appliances came in one color: white! and I was happy to get them!
Many many decades later diff house; had kitchen gutted, chose white kitchen cabinets and appliances. Now that solid surface materials are "reasonably" priced, Silestone(sp?) might be worth consideration - less maintenance is a good thing, so too is quality.......I recently replaced an early 80s washer dryer

stainless will never go out it is anti microbial and how many appliances can say that .I bought stainless because it was my choice not for resale and think the new ice black and ice white which home depot have are very shiny and almost glow in the dark and talk about smears and fingerprints on them ,the poor guy there was wiping them down constantly .I just bought all new appliances and gave my other stainless steel to a needy family ,it was only 8 years old .I wanted the lg double oven and wow is that thing huge .The new sealed compressor fridge is great as no more pulling fridge out every 6 months to clean that and then there was that annoying beep sound the old appliances made when done and now my new ones play music ,how soothing .Beep beep beep no more for me, 5 year extended warranty what more can you ask for .home depot rocks

Sissy77, I never knew about the playing of music instead of the beep. It never bothered me to hear the beep and now I know where the term, sing for your supper comes from, start singing! The thought of my stove playing musice is just so fuuny. Now I am going to have to find the person who will sing along to the music, as I only hum.

I have stainless and I like it well enough, but my stove will need to be replaced eventually. Since I'll never be able to have the cobalt blue AGA that I want, I am open to other options. One thing is sure--white or black will NEVER be in my kitchen. I wish the more affordable brands such as GE would offer other colors. Buttermilk yellow would be stunning in my kitchen...

SMS, Is that color buttermilk a pale yellow? I love the color red or Yellow. I would have to see a kitchen with those color appliances. I guess I have never been much for the color blue other then for that french print that was popular years back. The computer room that has those panels has a lot of blue. I would love a bedroom with the palest shade of pink almost oyster pink.

This is the butter milk paint on a pie safe in my kitchen. It is the color (or perhaps a little paler) that I'd like on my appliances

I can't open it. Ever since those red x marks have come on this page I have a problem. Sometimes I can open it if I sign off and go back on. I hope it works, but thanks for sending it.

It worked! The color is what is on every wall in my home. The color has darkened up just a little bit now. We are going to paint in the next few months but I am going to go with vanilla so it stays a bit lighter. I love your cabinet.

P.S that room is lovely and so warm looking.

I bought 2 cases of Jublilee Kitchen Wax years ago. When I moved 4 years ago, 1 case disappeared. It took up residence at my mother's house. At 87, she says she probably has a life-time supply of the best white appliance cleaner.

Jubilee - my Mom used it for darn-near everything - not only appliances, also to protect the "newness" of shoes, handbags, etc
Im 1961 Mom purchased a new stove - stainless steel(the real thing) and eventually replaced the existing kitchen sink with SS.

That said, IMO today's SS is a fad: quantity trumps quality! Mom's stove is in our garage awaiting a new home

Good grief. Stainless steel has been around for decades. Before it was used in residential settings, it was the material of choice for professional kitchens because of its durability. Not exactly a fad.

Although I prefer white appliances (or could be red budget allowing or maybe blue!) this house when we moved in in 1971 had a stainless steel sink. Still has.

It would not be my first choice but certainly has held up well.

I agree, many high quality ranges only come in stainless steel, I don't see them changing that any time soon.

I was reading in a financial magazine (can't remember which one) that manufacturers have been trying for several years to come up with an appliance color that will get customers to ditch their old stainless, but the public won't bite. I guess they'll just keep pitching until we do!

I was just in lowe's and saw a brand new display of stainless counter tops.Plus there were stainless wall tiles in the tile aisle. If anything stainless is showing up more, than less.

I'm apparently the person that keeps the black appliance option in business. I love black appliances. IMO it looks high tech. To me white and stainless just looks bland and white looks stark. (plus stainless makes for more wiping down). I would go for fire engine red or orange if it was offered tho.

When we bought new appliance a couple years ago, I opted for the imitation stainless because I didn't want the problems of fingerprints, etc on the real stainless. I love the fake! It cleans up so easily and doesn't show fingerprints.

I have a stainless sink-came in the house and I like it because it doesn't show stains, scratches, etc like the enamel sinks.

I am not a follower of decorating trends/fads. When I chose something for my home, it is because I like it. If I liked avacado green shag carpet(shudder), then I'd have it


I don't like granite and would never choose it! I'm a fan of butcher block even if it is outdated!


I can't see myself ever choosing white appliances again because they show dirt so easily. But this new ice white y'all are talking about- how is it different from regular old white?

I saw a new appliance finish (for me) in a magazine recently - Slate. Curious to see it in real life. It didn't look as dark as I thought it would from the name.
