One of our daughters' loves to sleep in a cold bedroom when she visits. I'm thinking of installing one of these systems so she can have the room as cold as she wants without freezing out the rest of us by air conditioning the entire house. They have them all throughout Europe and even Central America and I've always found them to be accurate in the temperature and very convenient. Anyone have these in your home? Do you like them? Pros, cons?

I too have seen these (upper wall, slim, white units) used in other parts of the world, but not locally.

Is there a company in your area who would install these? Or would this be a DIY installation and internet purchase? If you can find a local company, then ask if you could speak to a past customer for their opinion.

Sounds like an ideal solution, especially for a guest bedroom. (I know when we have visited friends in TX, their AC setting was always too warm for us to get a good nights sleep)

There are brands of ductless systems available in the USA. You can get them as straight AC units or as a heat pump unit to allow you to heat the space as well as cool it. One outside unit can support up to 3 inside units.

My uncle installed one in his house that had hot water heat and no duct work for the AC. It was very quiet and didn't require a window for a window unit or a new hole in the wall for a through the wall unit. The only sound you have inside is a small squirrel cage fan that moves the air across the coils.

General Disclaimer

Any advice given here is general in nature and is not necessarily valid for your given area. If in doubt check with your local codes enforcement department for what is required when doing electrical, plumbing or structural work on your house. Permits may or may not be required in your area and home owners may not be able to DIY some tasks. I have no way of knowing if you have the skills needed to complete the tasks you are asking about, when in doubt seek professional assistance.

My advice may be worth exactly what you pay me for it. :-) For the record I did not stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

They are widely used throughout the US too. I have one in our MN home because hot days are less there so we only cool the main living area.

I like it but...... the unit my brother has turns itself off completely when it reaches the preset temp. Ours only turns off the cooling unit , not the fan. I like his better.

It is cheaper to get any exterior unit that only handles one interior unit. You can DIY some of it but you would need an electrician and an Hvac person to balance the unit.

I've also seen these coming to the USA, I live in Mexico and have three of these in my home. I really like them, as said they are quiet and work great for one room. I like them better than central AC. Some houses here have them set in the wall with a grill in the front to hide the unit.

When I was living in Japan, I saw these everywhere. Came in really handy, especially in tropical Okinawa. Very quiet.

I imagine it would also work here in America. If you have think concrete walls, however, you may want consider carefully. I don't know how effective the air conditioning would be.
