Because of a stroke last weekend and weakness on the right side I am in need of an electric can opener..... at least temporarily. I would like something that i can put in a drawer as I don't like a cluttered countertop and I don't need that often.

Do any of you have recommendations?

I'm sorry I don't have any recommendations but wanted to say so sorry for your health problems. Hoping for a quick and full recovery.

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that metoo. My can opener sits on the counter so I can't make a recommendation for you. I know that there are some that you can hold in your hand and that are very small.

Oh dear Metwo, I am very sorry to hear of your stroke. Will you regain your strength?

We have a small elect can opener that we keep in a drawer. Think I got it at Bed,bath and beyond, it is just one small unit. You put it on the can and push a button on the top of it and it rotates by itself. Battery operated.

Awwww, metwo, so sorry to hear about the stroke ~ know you are a strong woman who won't let simple problems get in your way BUT, little things like opening cans will be so frustrating so...

I don't know of any can-openers that are battery operated so not much help here; think I would just go with a counter-top model for now ~ you can always put it away or donate it when your recovery is further along which I know will be soon.

metwo, You are one of the strongest women I know - this is just a temporary set-back - please post back and let us know how things are going for you.

Mine is called a one touch and it is not like the one pictured by Zone Lady. The body of mine looks sort of like the fuselage of a plane (but of course small, LOL)

I tried it this morning with my left hand and it worked fine. You place the cutting edge over the edge of the can (It cuts the can not the lid) and then just press the button on top.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear this news, metwo. Though we're only acquainted through the magic of the internet, as part of our cohesive group of regulars, you feel a little like family to me. Will be thinking of you through your recovery, which I hope will be total and quick.

I don't have one of these. It's one of those "As Seen On TV" gizmos, but has pretty decent reviews... Better than most of those 'flash in the pan' ASOTV items that don't work at all. Maybe it could get you by for a while, until your hand is stronger.

This is like mine, only looks a little squater. We have had excellent service from this one, but have replaced the batteries once or twice.

I too am sorry to hear of your health issues, metwo. I believe I have had several of the one's LOS mentioned available at most kitchen stores, dept. stores and BB&B. They're a breeze to use and they will do the job once clamped in place w/ or w/o hands. They are small, run on batteries and easily stashed in kitchen drawers.

For most can openers, it's been my experience that some cans lacking in "lips" are difficult to open w/ the automatic can openers. Fortuantely, they are not the norm tho.

No recommendation, but wanted to add my best wishes for quickly improving health.

Thank you to all that replied. I will know more next week after I see the doctor again. I consider myself lucky that it wasn't worse. I figure that since i got more mayo on the counter than the bread I can only get better.

Shopping is limited but we do have a Walgreens and other discount stores so I should be able to find one. Now I will not worry that I am wasting my money.

I too do not have a recommendation, but do wish you well in your recovery. So sorry this happened to you. Maybe your doc will suggest some PT. Good luck.

I have a can opener...looks a little like the one-touch. It fits in a holder that recharges the battery...we have it in our cupbard and run the electric cord down to the electric outlet through a small hole in the bottom shelf of the upper cupboard....can't really see the cord and the counter space is clean. That way the can opener is recharged and ready to go when needed.

Well, I found one like LOS suggested. (We have limited shopping in the town where the doctor is and this one is all I found). Like nettiejay, I don't usually trust "as seen on tv' stuff but this seemed to work. I was able to place it properly and since we rarely use cans, it fit into a drawer just fine.
