I have a 6 ft high book case that I am currently using as a pantry of sorts. I am looking for some ideas on how to make it more appealing to the eye. It is in plain view in the kitchen. I am an apartment renter, and need this for storage. Anyone have ideas, please post a message back.
Thank You
Frustrated Renter

Here are a couple to start: A couple of hinge attached rectangular wood frames (cover all or the lower part of the pantry), with fabric, foamcore or canvas inserts into the center, could form two doors? Or purchase some inexpensive louvered shutters or closet doors and cut to size to make two vertical doors.

I would paint it a nice clean white or off-white (or whatever color works for where it is), making it easier to keep clean and fresh looking. If you can, invest in some attractive storage containers for things like cereal, pasta, rice, and baking staples. Use cute baskets for grouping and storing small items (like jello, mix envelopes, etc.). In general, keep it neat and well-organized, and it should look great.

Just hand over the Blue Bell and no one get's hurt, seeeeee?

Thank you Aggiearchi, and conrad for you ideas. Have been toying with both ideas since reading you tips. Since living in an apartment, it is hard to do any painting, which has to be done inside, due to weather, that idea is pretty much nixed, even though that was my first thought. I'm getting started on this project about the middle of Oct., and hope to have it done in a matter of weeks, due to doing it only on my days off. I did come up with my idea of using shelving contact paper, on the inside as well as the outside. Cross you fingers that it turns out like what I picture in my mind!!

I would also like to suggest a curtain put up on a spring tention rod. This would be very simple to do and easy to take with you when you leave.

I like the idea of a curtain. You could also hang a roll-up bamboo blind on it. That idea is straight out of the 1970's.

Cool suggestion, Corovan, I like the bamboo shade idea. Kinda like a hippie shack. I guess I am straight out of the '70s.

If you wanted to paint your bookshelf it could be done indoors.
Choose day that it's not raining, preferably a breezy fall day. Open some windows, even a little bit.

Use latex paint and a roller or brush to paint. If it needs a couple coats let dry long enough in between usually only a couple hours is needed.
Place newspaper under the shelving before painting so if there are drips it won't ruin the floor.
You can use a fan if you want to help the paint dry.
This is a relatively easy project. It can be done in a weekend if not in one day.

You can but a latex and should have no problem with smell.. however I would invest in a more expensive paint so it doesn't scratch, especially if you are using one of those walnut
older bookcases. Go to a real paint store and explain what you are trying to do. I would line the shelves with rubber woven lining.

What might be neat is to hang a beaded or bamboo divider -- long stringy beads...
I still see them around...and a cheap solution.
You could just probably tack them across the top..and be done with the whole project within 15 minutes, maybe even not having to paint.

maybe this would not be desierable but you could paint everything but the tops of the shelfs and then lay down shelf liners. you can wipe down the liners.
