I hope someone has an idea for me. I need to put two shelves over my toilet in a basement bathroom. They need to be wide enough to hold a folded towel. Strong enough to hold a few economy size bottles of mouthwash, etc. I'm in a rental and, as they say, cash poor. I divorced most of my power tools too. Anyone have any ideas for creative ways to create a couple of shelves that won't tax my budget nor my capabilities?
What about an over the toilet rack instead of shelves? They always have them on sale at Target and they're sturdy. I've never had anything fall off of mine. You won't have to worry about patching up holes when you leave either
Takes me back to my days renting when I needed lots of sturdy bookshelves for very little cost - solution? The old DECORATIVE 12 inch square cement cinder blocks and two 36" by 12" planks of wood which you can have cut at the lumber store for no cost.
Just need 8 blocks, 2 planks, a can or two of spray paint for color if you would like to add a decorative touch and you are good to go - no tools required, attractive and very inexpensive as well! Check out the closet organizer section of a big-box home improvement store. The white vinyl-coated wire shelving comes in various widths and is surprisingly cheap... and waterproof!This message has been edited. Last edited by: Annett,
this is a metal shelf over a toilet in our bathroom. I found it at our town swap shop. Most towns don't have such facilities but I would recommend checking out Goodwill, Salvation army, etc also Habitat stores.
Otherwise a couple of boards with metal hardware store brackets should work. You could give the whole works a decorative paint treatment or cover them with paper or just paint them a solid color. Only problem with hanging them would be to find the studs!
Unfortunately, those over the toilet cabinets or shelving units are more than my budget can afford at the moment.
I ended up picking up two wire shelves at The Container Store for a total of $25. Ironically, it was cheaper to buy them as a package deal than it would have been to buy the elements of the "cheap" wire shelving they use in closets!
Now that I have that problem solved, I just have to create something to hang on the walls just for looks. But that's a much easier challenge.
