Depends on the granite. When you purchase granite you should go to a supplier with a yard that has slabs to choose from. They can explain to you which ones need to be sealed as well as the upkeep and maintenance. If some lighter colors aren't sealed properly they will absorb grease and oil and it is very difficult if not impossible to draw the oil out again. I had some years ago on an island with a cooktop and I got some stains where oil soaked into the granite. Couldn't get them out--even a professional couldn't do it. So shop around, get good advice before you install it.

Noted...and thanks! We are building and ordered an upgraded granite; should come with instructions, but if not, I'll work with our trusted agent to get them. She's very good with details.

I was told to NEVER use vinegar on granite...it is too acidic. I use Dr Watkins lemon cleaner (Target carries in in the natural products section near the Method & Seventh Generation products)...it cleans without streaking, smells clean and leaves a beautiful shine. About twice a year I use a product on it called "Rock Doctor" which is carried at Home Depot. It is fabulous and also doesn't streak...it is almost like when you put a nice coat of wax on your car...it makes it look amazing.
