Do any of you ever just get down and scrub your carpet? Or do you rent a cleaner or get it done professionally?? Is hand scrubbing as good as renting a machine?

We have our own carpet cleaning machine but rent one at least once a year as feel it's more powerful and does a more thorough job. Ours is fine for touch ups and quick once-overs. What I occasionally do is to add a bit of bleach to the water when cleaning. Makes the carpet feel much cleaner.
Years ago I did use a professional carpet cleaning service but felt I could do a better job myself. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Lucky ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Kindred spirits are not so scarce as I used to think. Never. for several reasons, the first being no carpet manufacturer recommends scrubbing carpet fibers. I blot up spills ASAP, spot treat stains as per recommended product directions. Years ago I had carpeting professionally shampooed but found that process took forever to dry; might damage underlayment, left a soap residue, and didn't sanitize. We have large dogs and none of us are overly careful about dripping "stuff". Luckily I found a local professional who uses a truck mounted steam cleaning process. Not only is he less expensive than the franchise company, he doesn't practice bait & switch, and does a better job. This message has been edited. Last edited by: tessa89, |

I have a Hoover Steamvac. It does a great job. Just as good as the truck mounted guy did who did my carpets the last time. I do it twice a year. Once in the summer and once before Christmas. I do it once the normal way then, go over with plain water, then an extra pass with the water suction only. use?
How much bleach do you use? Never tried that. |

Not much, probably about a tablespoon or two per bucket. Have also occasionally used some vinegar to rinse which is also bactericidal and removes odors. Just don't use the two at the same time. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Lucky ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Kindred spirits are not so scarce as I used to think. Of course not. If you scrub, where will the dirt go if not deeper into the pile? You must loosen the dirt with water/detergent solution, then it has to be suctioned out with a wet vacuum. If you just wet the dirt, scrub it in and leave it that way, you've only made mud pies... not cleaned the carpet. |

Ewww...yuck ! Thanks, Nettiejay, I never looked at it that way !! No mud pies for me!!
