Cleaning Carpets - what company do you use? Sign In/Join

It's that time again to clean our wall-to-wall carpeting. If you use a major company to do your cleaning, who do you use?

I got an estimate from Service Master of $600 to clean upstairs and downstairs (approx. 2,000 sq. ft.)... seemed like a whole lot of money to me!

I prefer hot water extraction (steam cleaning); no chemicals, no soap. Generally, three bedrooms, a hallway, 13 steps and one couch with stain protector sprayed on afterwards runs me about $300.

Prices will vary by location. Often the BEST carpet cleaning companies are not the advertised, national brand ones. We have a smaller locally owned company that also sells high quality carpet and flooring. They are by far the best, as one price does not fit all jobs (as we all know). They come out inspect, bid a price, and set up a cleaning time, pretreat and and use a truck mounted unit. Several clear rinses too. Hands down the best cleaning at the best/fair price in town.
Often a local real estate agent, or two can give you the names of the best local ones, if you do not want to clean it yourself.

I prefer to use a locally owned company and will only recommend steam cleaning. The problem with nationally advertised companies is they are either franchises or companies who employ local people but are owned elsewhere. You are paying for their advertising and overhead. I like to support small local businesses and find I get far better prices and excellent service from them.

I used a local guy--truck mounted cleaner--and while I really liked him and his prices were very reasonable, found Stanley Steemer did a better job.

Company chains like stanley steemer can vary from one location to another. Because they are individually owned, the cleaning products/machines are franchised, but the work/labor may vary a lot in quality. The one we have in town is costlier and does a worse job than the private company I mentioned. That is why I suggest to speak to a successful realtor or home stager for a suggestion on the best cleaning in your area. They tend to know which ones are worth the money.

When we started to need things done to our home we joined Angie's List. From carpet cleaning to finding a good groomer for our pup we have never been disappointed with the service.

Problem with using "Known Name Companies - ie. franchises" is the quality of the service depends, not on the name, but the quality of those working for the franchise which can vary widely...

I do think $600 is a bit high for 2000 sq/ft - I suggest you check around a bit more and ask neighbors, co-workers and friends who live locally for references - best source around. Good luck... Cool

What is it about these kinds of posts that bring out the advertisers? They don't even wait for the weekend anymore.

Cheap shots, for sure!

Best we can do is never to click on their links (and advise others not to), this is what motivates them to keep posting these ads.

Back to the topic...It is really easy to clean your own carpets, and much cheaper than hiring someone. (And I have to say I do a better job than a hire)

For years I rented a machine at the grocery store. I didn't get the soap, and only used water to do the cleaning. After a while I realized that it wouldn't cost me that much to buy my own machine, and that is what I do now. I get my machine out and use only water. Basically free cleaning. And it isn't that much harder than vacuuming.

Cook,
What brand cleaner are you using? I ask because you seem very satisfied with yours and I have been thinking of investing in one.

I'm waay to old to shampoo carpets! I hire a local professional (not a franchise) to steam clean WW carpet.
12 years and only one stain that was impossible to remove because I tried to do it!

I agree with you tessa89. We also have a locally owned company that is excellent. They have the truck mounted unit, will pretreat and they give you a price before they start.

For any spot cleaning or DIY, I really like the Hoover extraction Steam cleaners. They seem to last forever...much more so than the Bissell ones.
The hotter the water and the more rinse cycles you do with the really HOT WATER, the more successful the cleaning.

mamaspoon - I have an Easy Steamer by Dirt De.vil. I have had it for quite a while with no complaints. It does carpets and also has an attachment so I can do upholstery (I use that to do the inside of my car)

Carpet cleaning is simple you may clean your carpet without any professional. One of the solution is to use mixture of vinegar and water, it is cheap and gives better cleaning than other cleaning products. Apply it on fresh stains and then wash it with water and hang outside for drying. After drying vinegar smell will automatically disappears. But for old stains a solution of vinegar, baking soda and hot water is used.
In future, vacuum regularly to prevent dirt in your carpet.

Please explain why I'd choose to flood carpet & pad VS having it profesionally steam cleaned (not Stanley). IMO diy is a waste of time and money...we share our home with big dogs that don't wipe their feet Smile

Hmmm, might just be me, Marvin, but how in the world can I use your suggested vinegar/water solution (btw, what were the proportions of each?) and, then, hang my wall-to-wall carpet outside to dry?

I deliberately skipped your imbedded link - no advertising allowed here on these boards. Cool
