I have a bed that was handed down to me, it is pretty old. It is brass in color, but a magnet sticks to it so I know it is not truly brass. How can I shine it up......does any one know. It looks like heck and it was such a pretty bed at one time! Thanks!
Brass plating over steel is not uncommon. If it has tarnished dark, I would buy some Brasso or other metal cleaner made for brass. Cleaning it will require a lot of time and effort, then if you want to have it remain shiney, consider spraying with a clear coat to keep the tarnish at bay for as long as possible.
Do NOT use the brass cleaner that comes in a wadding form. I think its called Neva-Dull in a can. Does a great job on solid brass but will strip the brass off plate. Stick with BRASSO. I use Job Squad (a fabric type paper towel) and lots of elbow grease.
