I just purchased my home and there is a nice fireplace in my den area... unfortunately the brass fireplace doors are stained, and there are many scuff marks (it also looks like someone tried to paint the bottom of the doors)... is there anything I can do to clean the doors and brass around the doors? Thanks

It may be that someone tried to paint areas where there was corrosion. The first step would be to remove the paint. If brass is lacquered, then lacquer would have to be removed. Once paint and lacquer have been removed, then you can try to remove stains with metal polish. If successful, then wipe down with lacquer thinner to remove residues, tape off areas where you don't want lacquer to land, and spray with a couple coats of clear lacquer.

Another option is to simply paint all the brass black. The appeal of black accessories is very popular.

actually... painting the brass black would be preferred... is there a certain kind of paint I would have to use (considering that it will have to withstand a high temperature related to the fireplace)?

thanks :P

Check spray paint - I'm sure the label would say if were for high heat areas. I think there is a spray primer, as well, but the paint can should tell you what to use.

I'm going to paint my fireplace doors black to modernize them.
