Over a week ago I had a new kitchen sink, faucet and disposal installed - along with new solid surface counters.

There is a nasty smell evidently from the plumbing mastic. I asked a man in Lowes kitchen dept. and he said it should be gone "in a few days". It's now almost 10 days.

I leave the doors open as much as possible and have a jar of room freshener in the sink cabinet.

Checked Google - not much help there. Any suggestions appreciated.

scroll down to where they talk about using LOTS of fresh air to resolve the problem...it sounds awful! i'd use fans as much as possible to help the drying process...

The Lowe's guy is right. Smell should have been gone long ago.

DH used to use PVC glue on the job. The joint would dry and smell would be gone almost immediately. But he and co-workers used so much glue that they'd leave the lid off the can for extended periods, so they wouldn't have to twist it on and off all day. Is there any chance there was a container of it left behind under the sink by the plumber, which could be still emanating its odor?

No, nothing left behind - I have cleaned entire cabinet twice.

Tomorrow I am going back to Lowes to try to get someone to actually come and check this. Phone calls don't seem to work.

That truly doesn't seem right. I've had many sinks hooked up in my time and never had such an issue. Did you talk someone from Lowe's into coming back to check it?

Nettie: I have called twice, and they have not been responsive yet. I wasn't able to go out in person, but plan to.

I may have to contact credit card co. to see if they will reverse the charge until Lowes cooperates.

I don't understand either. We have always done our own plumbing here. I don't recall any bad odors from the PVC cement. And if they used copper tubing that shouldn't smell either.

Did they correctly install the P-traps. P-traps need water in them to stop the backflow of sewer gases. You said it was a "nasty" smell, is it a chemical smell?

I have heard nothing from Lowes or cabinet company.

I can't go to the store until Monday - a friend passed away, and I am going out of town to her service. I plan to contact the credit card company after I get back.

I think the chemical smell is coming from 2 6 x 6 inch pads that have "noise control" and brand name Zerony on them (attached to bottom of sink.

A lady from Lowes returned my last call Fri, and promised to come to my home Monday and try to cover up the smelly patches.

However, we are under a weather advisory, so doubt if it happens. We are on the extreme western edge of Sandy's possible track, and the mountains northeast of me are getting snow now.

I pray the storm turns away out to sea - the forecast is dire.
