I have a black shag area rug in our office, I vacuum the rug, but it seem like it needs a good cleaning, including a shampoo. Its not a wool or special fabric that needs special care, but I'm not sure how I can clean this? I don't want the expense of taking it somewhere as its just an inexpensive rug from target, but it does need a good scrubbing! Help!
i have an area rug (but it was a cheap one, don't know what your's is) and I take it outside in the driveway about 1x a year (we have 3 kids so it gets yucky) and lay it on a large piece of plastic so it doesn't soak up dirt and mud from the ground and soak it w/the garden hose and put some detergent on it and scrub it down really good with a floor brush. Rince it off and drape it over the swing set in the back and hose it off really good and let it dry like that.
WE didnt' pay much for the rugs so I figured after a bout of sick kids I didn't have much to loose. And it worked!

My mom used to take our rugs to the car wash. Got them good and wet and soapy and them beat the thunder out of them with the "rinse". Lots of pressure to get out lots of grime.

I wash my area rugs on my clean deck. Soak them with the garden hose, use dishwashing detergent and my feet. Rinse with the garden hose and hang them over the railing of the deck. Connie
