When you hang shirts on a hanger in the closet do you have the front of the shirt facing toward your right or toward your left?
I am in the habit of facing them to the left...thinking they will be taken down with the right hand. My husbands cleaners does it the opposite way so he has shirts facing both ways in his closet. Is there a right way? Does it depend on if you are right or left handed? Which do you do? and why? |

I'm left handed and I do it just the opposite.. never even thought about how he might need to take them down... interesting... What's even more interesting is that he's never said a word about it being backwards for him...

Interesting. Ours hang facing the left also, and the top most button buttoned. DH leaves the top button unbuttoned if he rehangs the shirt, and it was worn briefly, and does not yet necessarily need washing. Then he decides on the weekend what goes to the laundry basket.
An instructor in an organization class said she had her first husband "trained" so that he hung any briefly worn shirts to face the opposite way, so he & she could better judge what needed to be laundered. |

Facing left in this household.
This is akin to the discussion of what side of the bed do you occupy, whether at home, travelling, in a tent, etc. Here it's always me on left side and DH on the right-that's as when we're in the bed. This message has been edited. Last edited by: mamaspoon, |

Neither. I am not that rigid. The shirt goes on the hanger. As long as it doesn't fall off it is good. It goes into the closet whichever way the hook is facing. Never even thought there had to be thinking behind such a simple task.

I always face them to the left. I never knew I was doing it backwards because I am left handed. I will have to go turn all.

To the left. I don't know if there is a right or a wrong way or if it's because I'm right handed.
BTW, this is exactly what I thought it was! |

It's looking like "facing left" is the more common way.
I am going to see if hubby will ask his cleaners (in a fun way) if they are trained to face them to the right or if maybe the worker is left handed. I just like seeing everything going the same way... I really like all the hangers to be all the same kind too...In my closet they are. I don't organize clothes by color, but I do organize by short sleeve together, sleeveless, jackets, pants, all together etc. |

Whew! That was a close one! I hang facing to the left, my wife being left handed hangs them facing to the right. It bugs me enough that I have to change them.

Hi all,
I'm new to this particular board. You can usually find me on the pet board, and sometimes on the food board. I lurk on the decorating board a lot, but have decided I would like to become a part of the decorating board and this one also, if it's okay. And my answer to the question, ours face left. |

Gypsy, welcome to these boards. I am new here myself, primarily being in the real estate boards with a few trips to pets now that I know there is a pet board. I lurk on the decorating board, too.

LOL, Donna!!! Don't usually post here as I hate to even think about things like this! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Lucky ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Maybe Christmas," he thought, "doesn't come from a store. Well, I'm right handed and hang my clothes so that they face left. All of the hangers get hung facing the wall, too, not coming up from behind, if that makes any sense...

To the left. I'm pretty OCD about it.

Not so easy a question. I traditionally have clothes facing right. DH has always faced left. Unfortunately in our closet - left facing is better, but I can't seem to shake hanging right.

Also left-handed (seems like there are many of us) - My son has an almost all-white t-shirt wardrobe, so I hang shirts so that he can see the design on the front - so would that be to the left?
I also love this forum. I don't post often, but it's one of my favorites to read. |

When I was out of high school -- many moons ago -- ALL clothes were hung the same - facing left so that's how I always did it - UNTIL - I married a lefty who HAS to have his turned to the right -- it still messes me up!! lol

I hang mine going to the left, as I am right-handed. I was told that in case of a fire, it's easier to grab if you hang in the opposite direction of your favored hand. Now, before I get the yang, yang on if there is a fire, you better be running. I already know this, it's just what I was told. And just so happened in July my Aunt's home in Chicago caught afire, she has very expensive clothing & you'd better bet she got some of those articles out.

Facing left here! If I do find something facing right it's because hubby hangs it up and guess what, he's left handed! Interesting!

How I hang everything (shirts, dresses, sweaters, shorts, etc) on a hanger depends on which side of the closet it's going on. We have one very long walk in closet in the master bedroom. Most of my stuff is on the right with a little on the left. All of my husband's stuff is on the left. I hang everything so that the "front" of whatever it is faces toward the closet door. I just like being able to walk in from the closet door and "see" the fronts of everything. Yes, I'm terribly anal!

I agree with Whitdobe. In a walk in closet, have the fronts facing the door. That means you have to be organized and remember what goes on right or left side of closet. I hang tops according to color (in season) and sleeve length. It saves me a lot of time. Learned this from an OCD whose therapist told her to give it up. She did give it up and now wastes time hunting for the right top. I latched on to her method and save valuable minutes. I also store my spices alphabetically and save a lot of time. The older you get, the more valuable time becomes!

Hmmmmmmmmmm..... depends on my closet.... to be honest.
With the closet I have now.... I have my pants and skirts on the right side of my closet... facing left. And the shirts/blouses are on the left side of my closet .... facing right. In between is one of those hanging "shelf" type things for folded clothing? Made from some type of fabric and cardboard... lol. So I have something dividing the pants and tops. If that makes any sense to anyone?? WOLFIE |
