My daughter has a Frigidaire top loading, large capacity washer, about 2 yrs old. It has a foul odor coming from it. She used a product recommended by a cleaning service, which worked for a time, but now the odor is back. Does anyone have a similar problem and a cure?

Does she leave the door open after doing a load of clothes? Maybe put some cloryx and let it set....be sure to spin it out before adding her next load of clothes. I have heard of an odor in a front loader but not in a top loader.

This has been discussed as an issue here before. Some smart posters suggested checking the top rim of the drum. There is often a gutter of sorts, that can get full of lint/residue and not drain out properly. Check to see if this is the issue? Clean it as best you can and Spray some bleach cleaner into the grove/trim gutter if it has the odor.

Removal of the top of the washer (trim piece including the hinged door) is sometimes required, as this area is often hidden unless the washer goes off balance. Check your owners manual, online repair source for your model if it does not seem obvious as to how to do so.

And since few washers drain completely...put a slug of white vinegar in the tub when not in use. It will kill the mold/mildew & smells from that.

If the odor remains after using distilled vinegar, check to make sure connections are secure......possibly a leaky drain?

Run an empty short cycle with hot water, a little bleach and a little pine sol or similar cleanser, it will help kill the smell, I do it all the time. I also spray a mildew remover like Tilex or something in the tub once a month or so, let it set a bit, then wash a small load of old towels or rags before washing good stuff. My washer has a filter assembly down at the bottom too, hubby removes the cover and we wash the filter real good - it can start smelling too. Good luck!
