Mouse/rat in wall--what chemical to dry up the body and poison Sign In/Join

I heard on another thread that there is a product that when the rat/mouse eats it, it kills them by drying up their blood and body and there's no smell when they die inside a wall.

WHAT IS IT?? I went to our local feed mill but they had nothing they knew of--what is it please! We are going crazy and can't afford a professional company to come and do it for us.

Make that d-Con they have a website. it works by making the animals search for water outside your home and dries them up. I once found one 'glued' to my pull down attic steps- sorry for the multiple posts- splitting headache

The issue with Decon poison is often there are one or more nests (with babies in them). The adult mice may eat the poison, die and dry up...but the babies starve and STINK.

Especially when they are in wall or attic voids...the smell can linger for many weeks. the only true way to solve the mice problems are to trap as soon as you see/hear or otherwise have evidence of them. If you do see one...count on more, they are hardly ever alone. Research every possible access point were they can get in. If you can stick a pencil through any surrounding pipe opening to the outside, or crack in wall/foundation, they will get in. Stuff tight with steel wool and cover with wood or metal. Not an easy process...but the only way to keep them out.

Conrad makes a very good point about adults vs. babies and the poison bait issue.

All the reputable sites for rodent control recommend trapping as the first line remedy, because some other problems with poison control are that the bait portion of the poison becomes stale or rancid. Mice/rats want fresh food. The other thing is that, if they have access to other foods that they prefer (like that chocolate), they may not go for the poison until all the other food sources are gone.

You need to first ID exactly what pest you have. Have you seen droppings? Size will tell you if you have mice, rats, or something larger. Have you pinpointed the center of activity? That's where you want to set your traps. Set lots of traps. One or two won't suffice. Check them daily to see if a catch has been made or if the bait is gone without a catch made.

There's an art to trapping pests, but there is plenty of online direction as to how to go about it. Check university extension sites [like http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7483.html] for the most reliable advice.

The main thing is... Do it NOW, so the problem won't get even worse. Female mice have up to 10 litters a year, and those babies mature in about 10 weeks. All that equals LOTS of mice in a very short time.

Good luck to you.

30+ years ago our first home was an old farmhouse . We were overrun with mice. All the advice i was given was to use D-Con and that the de@d mice would not stink because the poison would cause them to seek water outdoors. Hogw@sh!! The odor was horrendous! They all got in the walls to dye, except the one that made it into the wall of the dishwasher!!!

I would not reccommend D-Con to anyone because that old myth is not true, nor is the one that says they will dry up and not stink.

The best way to get rid of them is old fashioned mouse traps and finding the holes where they are getting in and sealing them up.

There is a pellet available, but it may only be available to commercial pest control folks...it is the blue pellets...it kills them with no smell.
It was/is used in many grocery & drug stores when there is a problem.
Might contact your local pest control to see it they will sell you some.

We use "Place Packs" I think they are called. We get them at the farm-feed-store. They are little plastic/paper bags with the poison inside. The mouse eats through the paper and this poison causes the dead mice to have little to no smell. I never thought about babies. Maybe that is when I smell them a little - when there are babies.

On Decon... it does it's job but BE CAREFUL!!

Sister has a great place in WV mountains. Needless to say there are critters. When she found "evidence" of mice, decided she'd bait the place as she was getting ready to leave after a nice weekend with a friend and dogs in the woods. They had everything ready to just grab and go after work on a Friday. Just had to pull out cold stuff from fridge into a cooler and grab stuff sitting right by front door.

LUCKILY, she (or her friend) noticed bits of cardboard under diningroom table... room not used all that often. Ended up being bits of the DECON boxes!?! Didn't know which of 2 big dogs had gotten into it... 2-3 yo goofy yellow lab and OLD collie/sheperd mix. Called vet and was told get them here STAT!! They never made it to that mountain house and spent BIG ** at the vets. Decon inhibits blood ability to clot. Once they were in the mountains, would have easily been a HOUR away from any emergency vet. Vet said... by the time the dogs started actinig remotely sick... they'd have been as good as DEAD!!

YEARS ago, kept hearing noises in wall. Then saw almost cartoonish "mousehole" along baseboard! Called an exterminator who set up bait traps... under LOW deck that 2 big dogs couldn't remotely get under, in basement drop ceiling and in corner by mouse hole... barracaded so dogs couldn't get close to. A few days later, dogs were going NUTS trying to get into that corner! Husband pronounced... mouse is crawling out of hole and I think it's dying. Sister and I made the MISTAKE of looking! Well, this "mouse" was only about halfway outta the hole and what we could see hadda be 3-4 INCHES LONG!! That was NO MOUSE!!

What was it? Reading this post is like a commercial during a Hallmark commercial. I can't wait for the next scene.
