If you're talking about wiping them clean right after you use them, some people use baby wipes (alcohol free). I just immediately stamp the used pad onto a wet/damp paper towel.

I am also a painter and use a product called The Masters Brush Cleaner and Preserver for deep cleaning my brushes. It works really well for getting stubborn ink off of stamps. I know because most of my stamps have been bought at thrift stores and have been very used and pretty badly inked up. This product, with the help of a soft toothbrush, cleaned them nicely. The nice thing about this product is that it is not only alcohol free but has a conditioner in it which can help to keep your rubber stamps from drying out.

*Be aware that you may never get ALL of the ink off a used rubber stamp. Rubber is porous and does stain.
