Property Brothers:

1. Record program on DVR
2. Watch introductions
3. Fast forward through "dream home psych segment"
4. Watch fixer upper tours, watch for hints as to which home they've already purchased.
5. Watch presentation of reno plans and the house they chose.... pat self on back if you had guessed right.
6. Fast forward through fake negotiations reenactment.
7. Watch renovation process.... fast forward through scenes of new homeowners ineptly trying their hand at demolition.
8. Watch reveal.

House Hunters:

1. Check listings to see if it's a repeat. If it is, evaluate if it is really worth your time before proceeding.

2. Record on DVR.

3. Fast forward through all commercials. Fast forward through "coming up next" segments. (usually just before commercials) Fast forward through recap segments (usually right after commercials)

4. Watch home tours and keep an eye out for clues as to which house they've already purchased.

5. Make show more entertaining with drinking game (or M&M game, if you are not a drinker) and take a drink (or M&M) every time someone mentions space for their shoes, wanting granite counter tops, or making a joke about the outdated wallpaper (etc).

6. Watch (drumroll please) announcement of which house they chose and pat self on back if correct.

7. Watch the "later" portion that shows the house hunters now settled and marvel at the fantastic changes they made.

Hahaha. This is a funny thread.

This is how I watch Property Brothers.
1. Watch dream home psych segment
2. Watch reveal

This is how I watch House Hunters
1. Check listings to see if it's a repeat. If it is, evaluate if it is really worth your time before proceeding. In my case, are the houses luxurious and have high end finishes?

2. If I watch the house tours, roll my eyes every time the homebuyers stress how the size of "insert-common-area-of-house-here" is insufficient for all they so-called entertaining they are going to be doing.

2b. Feel the need to kick a puppy every time they insist on how a kitchen is unusable if it doesn't have granite countertops and stainless steel appliances, ESPECIALLY if said homebuyer then shamelessly admits that they don't or can't cook...and I LOVE puppies...

3. Watch (drumroll please) announcement of which house they chose.

4. Watch the "later" portion that shows the house hunters now settled and marvel at the fantastic changes they made.

How I watch Love It or List It
1. Tune in to HGTV at 10:00:01pm on Monday nights

Love it or List It:

1. Record to watch later
2. Watch introduction, mute during back and forth insulting pander between hosts
3. Fast forward during commercials, as well as the "coming up next" previews before the commercial break and the review just after the commercials.
4. Watch portion where the couple reveals wish list. Predict which "must have" Hilary will have to drop when the budget is too tight. Predict the compromise David will have to make.

5. Watch tour of house, predict what "unexpected budget buster" will come up.

5. Watch remaining show with remote in hand. Fast forward through the first two homes David shows the couple (they won't like them anyway). When the couple "returns to check progress" make a note of what they are wearing.... as this is the same thing they are wearing for all the house hunting tours and all the "check in visits"

6. Mute television whenever the couple is privately complaining "away from the camera"

7. Watch for telltale signs of bad acting.

8. Watch David's final home tour. Marvel at how the couple's attitude has changed. (ok- that last part was sarcastic)

9. Continue fast forwarding through, but watch in fast forward, stopping only if there is something in the renovation that looks interesting to you.

10. Watch reveal, look for bad acting cues as to what they will decide.

Or.... just watch the reveal.... or just don't watch it at all.

Income Property:

1. Record or watch with a DVR for the convenience of pausing, fast forwarding, or skipping back.

2. Watch the introduction, zone out watching Scott and thinking about how handsome he looks today.... hit the button to skip back and try to pay attention to the property this time.

3. Marvel at how little mortgage payments are in Canada. Compare the $1800/month payment they are making on their $400K mortgage to your own $1800/month payment on your $250K house and try to calculate how much they had to put down to get their mortgage that low. Marvel at how much they must be making..... skip back to re-watch what just happened while you were number crunching

4. Fast forward through commercials.

5. Predict what unexpected problems the demolition will reveal.

6. Admire Scott's muscle tone.

7. Watch the tradesmen install drywall, tile bathrooms, etc.

8. Watch the reveal, thinking about how talented Scott is.... try to remember he has a designer to help him, so it isn't all him.

9. Pause to read the final results on how much they are getting for rent- and do more number crunching.... "Just how much could I get if I made an apartment in my basement???"

Awwww....don't pick on Income Property Wink. It's one of the few shows I enjoy on HGTV. I do tape it and fast forward through the commercials but I enjoy every part of his show and it's not just because he's a cutie!! The designer he works with often uses abstract art in the reveal and since I've recently tried my hand at abstract art, it's another element of his show I love to see to be inspired for my own paintings. Now the other shows you mentioned -- well, they can all be cancelled as far as I'm concerned. Smile

I'm laughing with this thread. I have to add to the House Hunters section:
2.a. If the couple looking for a home are annoying, immediately delete episode. Life's too short to watch narcissistic attention seekers do anything.

Design Star:

1. Record show to watch later.... If you just can't wait to find out who is going home next, record and watch on a 15 minute delay so you can skip annoying parts but still hit the elimination at the end of the show.

2. Fast forward through the opening credits and that annoying "I'm gonna be a staaaaarrrr...." jingle. It will put you in a much better mood for the rest of the show.

3. Fast forward through the scenes as everyone is eating breakfast, getting ready, talking about the last challenge, etc. Start watching when they actually arrive at the location of the next challenge and watch what that challenge is.

4. Watch as the challenge proceeds, but do mini-skip fast forwards over any of the scenes where the contestants are talking about how the really have to nail this challenge, how they are unhappy with who they are partnered with, etc. Also, do any mini-skips where the contestants are obviously arguing or behaving in an embarrassing way.

5. Use the pause button as they are shopping, paying attention to things in the store that they may not even be noticing... but that you might want to use in your own home decor. Make a mental note of where they are shopping (if you have the budget to make this work)

6. Mute the commercials (or fast forward through them). If you do use the mute option, use the commercial time to consider what you might do if you had been given that challenge.

7. Watch the camera challenge, but with the remote handy.... just in case the presentations are too painful to watch. You can mute or fast forward through them.

8. Roll your eyes as the contestants gush about the guest judge.

9. Ask yourself.... "WHAT is he (or she) wearing???" when the judging panel shows up. (it seems at least one of them is always wearing something rather strange)

10. Watch the elimination.... fast forward through the part where the contestants are waiting to be called back... fast forward through any "under the bus" exchanges.

11. Predict who you think should go home- and who the judges will probably send home (not always the same thing). Mute during the final commercial break and discuss with anyone else in the room.

12. Cheer or yell at the judges- depending on your level of agreement- and go right to the message boards to discuss with other.

Are you sure I didn't post this? That is EXACTLY what I do...and I go for the M&M's instead of the drinking. Not that I mind the latter, but the M&Ms are CHOCOLATE and NOTHING beats chocolate in my book!

I also usually just wanted the last 10 minutes of NEW Love It Or List It episodes but since I saw most of those episodes on OWN before it moved over to HGTV, I rarely have any "new" episodes to watch.

I actually watch ALL of Income Property (though sometimes I do fast forward through SOME of the demo process).

Design Star...fast forward through a lot of the drama too.

Thanks to my DVR, I can watch about 3 hours of shows in less than an hour!

Agree, agree agree.... except I do not own DVR and have no desire to have one. Sooooo, since I am so low tech, whereever you have fast forward, insert "read book".

I'm reading a lot more books these days Smile

Amen! I don't have a DVR either - or subscribe to those nifty services where you can watch whenever you want to, so if I don't see it when it's shown I don't see it. And, since so much is NOT worth seeing I, too, choose to read. Even if I'm watching HGTV I generally have a book open or am on the computer at the same time.

Good for you, metwo! I hear people complain about how lousy HGTV is because they seem to tune into one channel (HGTV) and leave it on forever, and I keep asking, "why don't they just read a book?" Since they're commenting here, I know they're literate.

Glad to know people still recognize books as an entertainment medium.

TQ, good post. I have a DVR box and watch 95% of my non-sports TV and what passes for "news" these days via recording. The fast forward button is my friend.

So we don't watch commercials, is it any wonder HGTV won't listen to us. I watch exactly the same way.

I believe that tomatoqueen really hit it out of the park.
Personally, I don't own or rent a DVR mostly, because I don't think that there is a show that would guarant me taping for a later time, I just simply wait for the repeats.
I will agree that coming to this Message Board is by far much more entertaining that anything that HGTV has to offer.
I know only see Sat mornings and I guess that they mostly have DYI shows.

I've decided the best way to watch any of the latest batch of selling shows is to watch another channel.

Selling New York
Selling L.A.
Selling London
Born to Sell

yawn.

I know there are a lot of viewers who like these shows- and they really don't mind the real estate trend with HGTV. But I am not one of them, nor will I ever be.

House Hunters International:

1. Check listings to see if it is a part of the world that interests me.

2. Set the DVR.

3. Watch the beginning. If it is someone spending twice my home's value for a vacation home, stop and delete recording.

4. If it still interests me, watch with remote in hand. mute or fast forward through annoying parts and/or commercials.

I am sorry that you don't like Holmes, I guess we all have our own taste, and I respect that.
I find Holmes extremely interesting because it shows that first, any homeonwer that does anything to their home and does not go for permits is a fool.
Then, he does a good job at what he does, this is not a designer's job, to me, it belongs more on DYI than on HGTV. but as an educational program, I do believe that he has done a lot of good by showing us, what could go wrong when renovating.

Just learned that DDD, aka, Donna Da-Bings Dallas is coming back for a second season! OMG, I don't know if I should cry or laugh over this?

So How to Watch DDD

Either A)... don't bother, but then you will miss out on all the lively conversations on these boards!
or B) as follows...

1) Set your DVR to record
2) Get a VERY large bag of M&M's
3) Skip the fluffy intro stuff touting how wonderful she is
4) Watch to see which friend or family member she has cornered to re-do their McMansion
5) Admire the decor of the room Donna is about to ruin, or the lovely blank canvas that has so many possibilities
6) Don't fast forward thru the commericals, cause this is likely the best part of program!
7) Eat an M&M for every cheap rinestone she hot glues on something (now you see why you need such a large bag?)
8) If Donna decides to climb a ladder in 4 inch spiked heels eat a handful of M&M's
9) Go for another handful every time Donna (or anyone for that matter) uses the word "BLING"
10) Watch reveal and be thankful Donna is NOT your friend or relative!
11) Hop on the boards and enjoy the Donna bashing!

Oh my! To think I have lost out in the past on this opportunity to indulge in one of my favorite treats (M&Ms! NOT DDD)! Hmmm -- may have to re-think the never-bothering-to-watch-this-show attitude I have held on to since they first announced the show!

But that's just my 2 cents!

You've almost made me want to watch this show just to see what kind of disaster Donna is.

Income Property: record, fast forward, all jump up to do the "Scott Dance" pretending to move walls, watch reno, get ice cream, watch reveal.

Candace Tells All: record, watch intro long enough to realize they only actually filmed four episodes and we've seen this one 6 x's, erase.

Sarah's House: record, skip intro, realize it's a repeat, watch anyway, laugh, and catch some good details that we've previously missed.

Mom Caves: can't find remote fast enough, shoot T.V. Elvis style with a small hand gun, go shopping for yet another T.V.

Finally a post that will save me time on this show. It bugs me that Scott NEVER has a show where he doesn't find some problem. Similar to Hillary on "Love It or List It" except Scott is so easy on the eyes. Look for episodes where he demos in sleeveless shirt.
