I have to say that I despise this show, I have never seen such a blatant misuse of money, especially when the majority of the country is in dire need, I might be be a tad bit enviuos of the money they have, but never of the horrenous way they spend it

One house was a sheiks, and was on top of a building, was beautiful, but again what a waste of money,
we struggle daily and only rely on a higher power to help us,
But living as a comfortable person and modest means seems to make happier families and marriages IMO

They had one on the other night - can't remember the exact name but it was something like Billionaire Block. One house they showed was 23,000 sq. ft - plus they had a 5,000 sq ft. ice skating rink, stables and I can't remember what else. The HO seemed nice enough but when she said she cleaned the house herself to make sure it was done right I lost it. No way.
Anyway, the whole premise of the show was to describe what you could get if you were a Billionaire - Uh, thanks, I'd have a pretty nice house and could have fun actually decorating it the way I do for my clients (and can't afford in my own life) but I could get everything done that would make me very happy for well under 1M - the rest I'd probably end up establishing a foundation that would give directly to the needy who seem to fall between the cracks of society.

I've only watched a little bit of a couple shows (there was nothing else on TV) and I have not seen anything that I would want even in my wildest dreams.

People can spend their money the way they want to but I am amazed at what they spend it on.

I love watching shows like this, sometimes for ideas or just to see the outrageous designs. I think people who can afford it should do exactly what they want with their money. It's not misuse...if it was YOUR money it would be misuse. LOL!

I see some places that are absolutely gorgeous and tastefully done. Then there are the weird and tacky. Again cementing the saying that money doesn't buy good taste. (or good sense) Wink

I agree about the money to spend as they please,
but ITS also sad to have to buy things to be happy

and your right this is a terrible lack of good sense

my good sense actually feels sorry for them

(to quote money can't buy you love) but then again doesn't it to these people?

Million dollar HOMES I don't have an issue with....

It's Million dollar ROOMS that I find obscene and over the top. But, hey, if people have it like that gd bless them.

Some of this stuff is just spending money to spend it. I hope the owners are happy. But I can't imagine there's not some emptiness in their personalities some where. Ys. this amateur psychologist issaying no body spends money like that unless it's to show off (why the need to do that?...just because you can? There's a reason for that.)

-- a half-million dollar fire place, a 250-thousand dollar table, a 100-thousand dollar floor...really, REALLY?!
-- a half million dollar lighting system, and 250-thousand dollar fish tank, a 100-thousand dollar door?

I agree that these rooms are ridiculous but the money to build them went to suppliers, contractors and their employees who I'm sure were happy to have a job.

here we are now, entertain us

I caught a few minutes of one episode yesterday and I had to think about the glory days of the Robber Barons with their elegant homes on the correct streets of NYC, summer homes in Newport, private steamers, and over the top parties.

It also reminded me of a seminar I attended about selling to rich people - that many of them still suffer from "Keeping Up With The Joneses" syndrome.

But for the life of me on all the money plowed into these places - how does someone get the correct roll and spin on a glass top pool table??

If aychi hadn't said it first, I would have. Most of these rooms represent some degree of economic stimulus for local builders, craftspeople, painters, ect. (without going into transport companies to haul the raw materials).

Personally I have yet to see "decoration" that I like, with the exception of the leather upholstered walls in the round garage, but some of the technical aspects of the construction, like movable walls, etc., are very interesting.

I think what bugs me the most and others who have low opinions of these shows is how tasteless the end result tends to be.

Charles D mentioned the leather upholstered garage walls (Mitt?). I'm trying to imagine myself as a gazillionaire and my decorator to the stars brings me the idea of lining the walls of my 10 car garage with leather. My first reaction - Why? My second reaction - why waste good leather on a garage? (Maybe I'm not cut out for gazillionaire) and my third = wouldn't it absorb smells and odors associated with a garage?

Even if you are as rich as Cresus - doesn't practicality fit in?
