How about a role reversal show?
The snotty designers or realtors show up, tell you what's wrong with your home, and you yell "BITE ME" and kick 'em to the curb. |

I'm sure your home is absolutely beautiful, and gorgeously decorated and in perfect order with everything is ready if you need to sell suddenly. These shows are needed for the other 99.999 percent who don't realize that things need to be/can be fixed/tweaked/changed. And, as for snotty professionals....I'm aware that there are a lot of them out there and some on HGTV (who knew?) but honestly....the majority of professionals whether designers, decorators, realtors or stagers are there to work WITH the HO to get the house either sold or designed to the level that will be comfortable for whomever lives there. As one of those professionals I find myself having to often undo a whole lot of damage done by the attitude you've expressed. We are doing a service for the HO and most of us are just plain folks who have the training to provide that service. We are not snotty, snippy or overbearing and do not look down our noses at those who write our paychecks. There is a fine line between being tactful and saying what needs to be said. I would not be doing my clients any favors by not telling them the truth about things. Perhaps the Freemans get a bit over the top but it's t.v. - take the advice the shows give (except for you, of course, who live in a perfect world and a perfect house) when it's applicable, and take the drama with a grain of salt. |

I LOVE IT! Our homes are a reflection of who we are. As such there are NO "design flaws" or mistakes in our homes. However, as each of us is an individual what one person may love another may despise. I would never furnish or decorate my home to please someone other than myself. If I had a wife or live-in girlfriend I would compromise and expect her to do the same when it came to our furnishings. I know that I have many "mistakes and errors" in my home that would seriously affect any effort to sell my home as it currently appears and I accept that many buyers would be "turned off" by some of my belongings. If I were to sell I would most assuredly do some of the simple things to "neutralize" my home so that potential buyers would be able to see the house and not focus on the personal taste of the seller. |

"Perhaps the Freemans are a little over the top"?? Perhaps??
Hg's shows are loaded with drama that doesn't necessariy enhance them. I feel, in most cases, the public watches dispite the drama, not because of it. I do indeed live in a perfect house. It's perfect for me. I'm not selling it. And if I was, and I employed an alleged professional who was as insulting as some I've seen on hg, they'd be experiencing my own brand of blunt honesty. "As one of those professionals I find myself having to often undo a whole lot of damage done by the attitude you've expressed." Perhaps you'd be more successful in redirecting your efforts raising the regard folks have for same professionals by working on hg to stop depicting your peers as such overbearing louts. |

I love it and I'd watch it. For Suzin Austin, let me say that your snotty response just bears out what llazy1 said. The Freeman's give your industry a very bad rep. I don't care if they are on TV or not, that cruel and haughty language is never acceptable. If they truly want to help people, they can say that the kitchen needs to be cleaned up,neutralized, remodeled.... whatever, without making it sound like the town dump. And their stupid questions - like what is this room??? - are so ridiculous, I wonder the director doesn't throw up his/her hands and give up on the whole thing. The Freemans are cruel, nasty, and oh so arrogant. But I guess we should commend them on getting so many TV shows on so little talent. |

Y'all misread my response - I'm probably about the least snotty person in the decorating industry and my clients have told me numerous times how much they appreciate my low key, flexible attitude and they recommend me to their friends because of that. Many of them have started off being very apprehensive because they have heard horror stories about truly snotty decorators - by showing them that we are really just people, working my tail off and making it all fun, I'm trying very hard to get rid of the stereotype. T.V. caters to drama, but normal professionals would be crazy to be all snotty with their clients and I'm convinced most of us aren't - we work darn hard to give our clients beautiful results, often spending countless hours behind the scenes, acting as referees between husband and wife, trying to get the best deal for the client from a vendor, and even putting off vacations so we can be on the scene "just in case" if a big project is in progress. No, I wouldn't give this career up for anything - I love it and love my clients even when I'm exhausted at the end of a 12 hour day dealing with a lost order, a client that needs to be reassured, delayed workmen, sore muscles and numerous other things that come up. I'm protective of my career and my fellow decorating professionals and believe in telling it like it is,....but snotty? Nah.

Suz, You rock! I'd hire you any time!

I would rather have the Freemans barge into my home and be rude with suggestions than have my home linger on the market because I thought it was perfect just the way it is.
And you're way off on our Texas gal. Glance at the other forums and you'll agree she is kind and helpful. |

4HGTV & Jdillon - thank you both for the kind words and for understanding what I was trying to get across. You have no idea what it meant to me tonight! Been a tough day - needed the support! Thanks again.

I'm with you Suz - professionals in the field would find themselves quickly bereft of clients if they were snotty or callous! The fact that you continue to work is strong enough evidence for me that you don't display either of those traits...
That said, if the Freemans were to done out hours and hours of information without a hint of personality and drama, I think we'd find HGTV would be a snoozefest. I'm a big believer in markets... If the Freemans got their own show, AND it renewed, then it means people are watching it and liking it: the few complaints on this website notwithstanding. IMO, they're funny to watch! |

I agree with Suz in Austin, too. Although I love to decorate and get tons of compliments on my decorating style, I appreciated it when my realtor laid down the cold hard facts on what needed to be done to sell my house. She often complimented me on the decorating and always relayed positive comments from people who had viewed the house, BUT there are always things that you, as the owner, don't see. Gosh, even I had some things to change! ha ha
My first realtor, being so impressed with my house, convinced me to list at a higher price than I felt was merited and it was a horrible experience. You really DO need someone like the Freemans who care enough (and have the experience and knowledge) to get your house sold for you.
