I always enjoyed Room by Room. I'm really miss seeing Matt and Shari. Their Fall, Halloween, and Christmas specials were always so good. HGTV, at least show the specials again.

Why oh why don't I learn to not search HGTV web site for news on a programs airing times!
Searching this web site is so frustrating it deserves an award. I miss the program as well. I thought it was on in one of the early AM line ups. I went to the cable site before searching here. I didn't find a listing for "Room by Room" this week. Has it been completely taken off the air. |

I used to enjoy this show also but in keeping with the trend towards younger viewers and updated programming (HGTV hype, not necessarily my opinion of what they're actually achieving) they apparently are not interested any longer in showing us nice comfortable predictable shows. I think Shari and Matt were sort of stuck in doing one or two styles and although they had some good ideas to pass along, they weren't really on the cutting edge. |
So they don't show Room by Room in primetime, but they can still have it on in the early morning or daytime line up. I really miss them too. I learned the best formula for making Roman Shades, from Shari. I had recorded it on my DVR but unfortunately it got deleted. Thankfully I have a good enough memory that I still remember how to do it.

I enjoyed Room by Room too, and I think Matt and Shari could do edgier rooms (remember the the modern room with the big windows) but got caught up in universaly liveable rooms which most people don't want to see anymore. May be they can put together some edgier stuff and come back.

I use to watch that show. I think that they did a really good job of instructions on how to do things. Shari would have her "board" that she would show any paint treatments or wall treatments. I picked up some good things from Matt too.
I really didn't like the way they used all that wall paper. I heard that wall paper is coming back but I don't care for it, mostly because it is too difficult to remove. I am sure that the shows that we were looking at were pretty old and I bet if they came back on that they would be more in touch with today's designs. |

I loved Room by Room too. It was one the first shows that got me hooked to watch HGTV. Even though I may not like every room style they did, the little things we could learn from Matt and Sheri were helpful to everyone in every style. I miss them and all the other good shows HGTV used to offer.

I enjoyed them, as well, especially when they pulled out the book at the end and went over designs, gave instructions, etc.
I can understand that HGTV is looking for the younger demographic, but can't they at least find some new hosts who offer good tips like these 2 did? |

I liked RBR as well, although not for the design aspect. I felt the designs were cheap and predictable, however there were some elements of the designs which I did like. I also liked the fact Matt and Shari would show you how to do things like put up crown molding, do faux wains coating or make your own shades. This is what made the show good.

They always try to teach. Matt was a teacher at one time and when he explained how to do something - he made the directions clear and precise

I never missed this show (or tried not to). They actually explained and showed how to make things. Except for the scrapbook at the end, the show was good. I thought the two were paired well together.

Another good show they should bring back. Baah-Hum-bug...on the fact HGTV is trying to reach a different audience!! This generation needs to learn how to do things properly as well as the age group 40 & up. And not everybody has the same taste, I have 2 siblings, only 4 years a part and have not hit the age of 40. One likes things simple and contemporary and the other very, very traditional. We need a mix of the older shows, i.e., room by room, debbie travis, country style, etc. along with the new shows. There are plenty of shows running back-to-back, where there could be a larger variety if some of the older shows were brought back and put in some of the 30 min. slots. There are millions of people watching HGTV with millions of styles and tastes. Everyone doesn't care about Hidden Potential or House Hunters...where is there any design potential in those 2 shows?

I don't miss RXR; it was corny, hackneyed and did I say corny?
The RXR shows are so old skool I don't know how anyone can watch them with a straight face...and, before I get hit 1000X with a double roll of wallpaper, I should tell you that I am an old fogey who appreciates restraint in design and decor and who longs for elegance and clean lines and quality over quantity. Have Matt and Shari ever met a wall that didn't have to be layered, papered, sponged, ragged, rolled -- all at one time? What ever happened to simplicity? Craftsy-cutsy...tchotkes by the thousands... I could go on and on. I think Matt & Shari would be great to have as next door neighbors to kick back with and knock back a few brewskis and brats. I just would not let them loose in my house. |
I get it, you didn't like Room by Room but I'd find it interesting to hear what designers you do like? Candice is the queen of tchotkes. In fact, I don't remember many tchotkes on Room by Room. I know they were keen on silk plants. And as far as wall treatments were concerned, they did cover all the things you mentioned above but not all in one room. Each week they might feature a different wall painting/covering technique which many of their fans enjoyed seeing....OPTIONS! My age fall between young and old and I enjoyed their show because of their personalities and their teaching abilities. |
1wiley1, you're right. Matt and Shari did *lots* of different things. It would be nice to see something new or at least different every day. Just like Debbie Travis with all of her great painting techniques, Matt and Shari tried to cover and teach a variety of styles and techniques....apparently that's not what HGTV wants to be anymore. Wallpaper is back in style right now, and for some people it never went out, but how many shows do you see using it on HGTV? They're not as modern and up-to-date as they'd like to think. I guess it's easier for the robots at HGTV to do cliched stainless/granite ad infinitum, and the braindead viewers will eat it up like slop. |

I suppose it depends on your geographic location as to whether wallpaper is "in" or not. Personally I have not seen one updated home here (or model home or high end home)that has used wallpaper. My clients would probably fire me on the spot if I suggested they use wallpaper in any room and my realtor friends say that is one huge turn off when they're showing property. Now, I've seen wallpaper done well and realize that in some parts of the country many of the type of houses seem to want that look - and of course I haven't been in every single home here in Austin but from everything I've seen, wallpaper is not the new "in" look. |
It's big here in California and according to Kenneth Brown (reDesign), it's used A LOT again with the clients he deals with. He did an interview with CNN which is available to view on his website where he tells the interviewer how wallpaper is back. I was in Austin earlier this year when he had a speaking engagement and I believe he even shared that thought with your fellow Texans! Of course, today's wallpapers aren't the same as what we know from years ago. Now it's more about textured papers than about patterns. |

Gladly...not one designer on HGTV. Not even Candice Olsen. Perhaps Kenneth Brown. I posted on another forum about this, but I am happy to repeat who are a few of my favorite designers. Feel free to look them up and you'll see why. Jose Solis Bentancourt Kelly Hoppen Thomas Pheasant Barclay Butera Darryl Carter Thanks for asking. |
I'm not into design enough to know the professional folks who have never had a show on television. I'm sure these people are excellent in their field. Glad to see you will at least consider Kenneth as the only possible HGTV designer you can appreciate. I also really liked Sarah Richardson. I'm always drawn to a show or a designer who can not only offer us good design tips but who also have a pleasing personality. |
I'm sure you're right about different geographic areas. It could be a while before it reaches everywhere, but it's been in style in New York for a few years, and I've seen it a lot in DC in the last year or so as well. It's not the "granny" style wallpaper, as others have mentioned it's more about textures and bolder colors and patterns. I've only used it on one wall as an accent, which is a little different from the granny style as well. |
OK, thanks for the clarification - In my mind that is wall covering rather than wall paper....sounds like a small difference but when I think of wall paper I think of that horrid stuff that had like 3 different patterns going on and you just HAD to have a border too. I have seen some incredible wall coverings lately. |

Why not? |

Because during the time that this show was being made - that style was the norm. The darker colors, the faux, the stencil, they were really into different wall treatments. That was the style at that time. They have not made new shows for quite a while except Christmas and Fall specials. I am not saying you are wrong in not liking them... that is your choice. I am saying that this was the style and they were teaching the style. My whole house was burgandy and green for a while and then it went into Tuscanny with faux walls. Many people learned off of C Lowell, Lynette Jennings, Matt and Shari and Michael Payne. They showed us the trends and although some I liked and some I didn't. They did teach it.
I hate clutter around now... my taste has evolved. I have settled on a traditional look but when I was younger. I had a variety. This message has been edited. Last edited by: chrissyfrog, Frogs have it easy...they eat what bugs them |
