This show starts tonight! I missed the show the one other time it aired and I am looking forward to seeing the series start tonight.

I'm not much of a "junk" fan but hey...it's not HH or HHI or Mike Holmes, so maybe I'll watch.

OK, so some aspects I liked, and it was a much better slice of Texas than Donna from last year. However, nobody here is going to be happy about taking a fan out of a master bedroom. Even tho that chandelier LOOKED pretty, the room has to be functional especially in such a key element as the fan. I also thought the headboard (altho a terrific idea) was too wide.

Bottom line: I'll watch it again - there were some good ideas, but I'd like to see it jazzed up a bit. If all the episodes are junk, it will get old fast, IMO.

I hope it is repeated later as I was gone....Megs show is on too! yippy

Really liked the ideas that Meg had tonight, altho the colors all together were a bit jarring to me. I think the shelf effect on the railing was my favorite thing.

For the style that they were designing in, I really liked it. I loved the mirrors with the vintage sign, that was my favorite. And the cowhide rug, small vintage fan, the hat rack were all great. The only thing I really did not like were the fabrics. I just found them to be very frilly and thought it made the room way too 'little girl'. From the bedding to the curtains I just wanted to rip them out and light them on fire.

Overall, I was disappointed. First and foremost, a ceiling fan seems too important to yank out of a TX bedroom. Don't believe the vintage desk fan comes close WRT its function.

Liked those columns and had several ideas as to how they could use both of them, without altering their shape. Given that, I wasn't thrilled with the way they put the hat rack together. No big deal but sorta' grossed me out when she mentioned all the old sweat on that hat and then they placed it over someone's jacket on the rack.

Yes, also believed the headboard was too large and hated the frilly fabrics. Especially hated the way she cut the lace b/c it will fray even more. (I'm with you on lighting that on fire, Lola.) Too bad they cut down that "Lucky Spin" sign.

The armoire looked o.k. but they didn't really focus on it (other than the brief mention) or provide a close-up. The cowhide rug wasn't a factor for me b/c it was existing.

Will give them at least 1 more chance.

I spotted this one and recorded it.... just watched it.

It was fun, and I do enjoy watching the creative process. Though, there was really nothing that inspired me or that I would want to duplicate.

I don't know that I'll watch again- but it was a good try. It was just more "country" than I could handle in one show.

I thought the JUNK GYPSIES did a FABULOUS job on the bedroom! The show was amazing! It brought a whole new freshness and fun to HGTV. The sisters are so talented and we are extremely blessed to be able to watch them work their magic on TV!! The fans were an excellent idea! And how cool is the column hat/coat rack! To display sentimental items AND show their western flair. Love it! The soft bedding with the rustic headboard was brilliant. It captured the heart of both the wife AND husband. The curtains with the wedding dress lace...very romantic... I could go on and on....Way to go JUNK GYPSIES!! I can't wait to watch the next show!!

Personally, I would have given the hat more prominence by combining with their other TX hats in a wall display. That way, the sweaty one wouldn't be combined with clothing. Besides the ceiling fan removal, guess that was my biggest pet peeve about the room.

Below it, I'd have probably used some reclaimed lumber or something rustic, painted or decorated in some fashion, with hooks for their coats. If they needed it, I'd have also constructed a bench (placed below the coat rack) with shoe storage below with the lumber. Can't remember the space plan exactly but these 3 things might be considered a mini-mudroom. That way, both columns would be available for my other project(s). (Because they had all these items in their room, I'm assuming they lacked mudroom space in their entryway or other location in the home.)

Agree, TQ, it was a tad more country than I can handle. Although the room wasn't exactly my style, that's my solution (above) for the client to resolve that issue.

This seemed a bit much for a first post.

The ladies were fun, but I don't share their aesthetic.

While the Western, rustic style is not one, I prefer, I enjoy the show and I think the gypsies are creative and very skilled at re-purposing old things. Their projects incorporate the whole family, and the show has a nice vibe. I look forward to seeing what they will come up with next.

I like the idea of the show. Alot of people like old items turned into something new, useable for today. At least they take a couple minutes to show HOW they repurposed the items.

I will keep watching!

You might have a point there, BB - it's just a shame both shows are in Texas. I can tell you for sure that contrary to what HGTV would like to have you believe, there are just a whole lot of people here who don't decorate in non-stop bling or junk.

Laughing, doodles - so we're sure HGTV doesn't believe their fans do decorate in bling and junk? Tired this evening ...

Actually wasn't even consciously focusing on the TX factor - we just can't help but crack up at some of their projects, e.g. our current fave - the used book, paper (book pages) chandelier.

That chandlier with the book pages reminded me of the kitchen light that Genevieve did with the recipe cards.

I thought the french horn light was clever. They were guests on the kathie lee and hoda show recently

Gen could almost (but not really, haha) claim that the recipe card light was functional. (That was a lousy kitchen overall, IMHO.)

My biggest concern about the JG chandy was that it appeared to be a fire hazard. The numerous book pages appeared closely centered around the light source. They didn't mention it but we didn't believe they used an led light. It might overheat.

Did anyone catch this past weeks episode? I loved it! I gotta admit that they've totally grown on me. I know that I really like a show when I watch an episode several times. Generally I just delete them after I watch them but this episode was very inspiring to me. I may prefer things a little more glam but I love the recycle/reuse premise and I love that HGTV has brought out some shows that incorporate that. I'm so sick of the design shows where everything is brand new and done from scratch. I love that they re-purpose items. Those pirate chandeliers were incredible!! I want them!

I like watching the Junk Gypsies. Maybe if I lived in Texas, in the country, I would incorporate a lot of their design ideas in my home (but not so overwhelmingly junk though). I like the sisters though and their family and how they all work together.

I don't think it is a fair comparison though to compare them to Donna! Donna, was all glitz and glammer and the only way she got dirty was maybe too much hot glue on her fingers. Plus it seemed she considered herself a designer or decorator or whatever.

The JG, however, are totally hands-on and just do what they love, creating something new out of something old. It seemed they did most of their decorating for friends or family, but maybe I am mistaken on that part.

While both sets maybe over the top in "decorating," I would take the JG over DDD anyday! But that is just my personal opinion. :-)

Both women have talent and charming, telegenic personalities. I think whole rooms full of this stuff is too much, but I could see it used more judiciously for certain projects.

IMHO it all kind of looks the same so as far a viewing the show is concerned, if I see it, I see. If I miss, oh well.

Charles, it sort of reminds me of the Mackenzie-Child stuff (I prefer that to JG hands down) - one, maybe two pieces can be whimsical and interesting but a whole room is tiresome.

When there is a first poster who goes on so extravagantly, you can bet it's a relative of the Junk Girls. Happens on these boards with every new show.

I didn't see the show (I don't like junk) but I do wonder why every decorator removes ceiling fans! They are so functional and nowadays come in beautiful designs.

Soosie, that couldn't be further from the truth in the rooms that I do. Here in Texas we NEED ceiling fans and there are some really nice ones on the market nowadays. Sure, I'd love a gorgeous light fixture instead, but if a room doesn't work for the family it's designed for it's a huge waste of time and money. The only thing I do tell my clients is that I opt for any lights on the fan to either be soft globes or pointed up, so you don't get the "3rd degree effect".

Doodles & Charles - you said exactly what I've felt. I really could see incorporating pieces but to do an entire room in this style, for me personally, would just be too much. A piece here and there would add interest. However I do love the show and the premise of reuse and recycle. Just a few short months ago I knew nothing about design and now I've read 26 books (5 more sitting in front of me and 1 more I just ordered from Amazon tonight) and my love of this keeps growing. I think this is one more show that feeds into my interest.

AK, when I compared JG to DDD, I was primarily only referring to the entertainment value of the two programs and their individual, telegenic personalities - not their specific decorating skills, comparative styles or methods.

Personally, I'm not into either bling or junk as a decorating style/scheme, although I certainly agree that reduce/reuse/recycle and repurposing items s/b done whenever possible.

JMHO.

I really like JG for many reasons. They do seem to be talented, nice, and don't take themselves too seriously; and the supporting cast of their family is a refreshing spin. I like the re-purposing and the think outside of the box approach. I do think an ENTIRE room makeover with ALL re-purposed, reinvented decor is a bit much. At least they make it fun to watch and I hope HGTV gives this show a chance.

I happened to catch the end of this show last night (it isn't on my "regularly scheduled program" list). They do seem like nice, down to earth people - altho have heard rumors from over that way that things aren't always what they seem - and the clients they have do seem to be happy. That's the good part.
HOWEVER: That room last night gave me the heebiejeebies it was so filled with "stuff" - I'd be a nervous wreck in there. While not a minimalist by any means, I want a place to relax and let my mind rest. I thought in that room my eyeballs would be spinning independently of each other trying to take it all in.
