Placeholder for tonight's episode, if anyone's watching!

Time for SS to tackle a kid's room. I'm guilty of shying away from these sometimes and then I discover that, if done right, they can be extremely fun and creative.

You're right - they can be a lot of fun. I don't do too many of them but did a "Cinderella" one for a little girl a couple years ago complete with the silver pumpkin bed and frothy curtains, etc. I think they can be tricky because of how fast kids outgrow whatever phase they happen to be in when the room is done.
I'll watch SS tonight and see what she does - thanks for the reminder.

Oh boy - another 30 minute commercial for Target! What a let down. I had hoped after the last couple of shows where they appeared to shop all over NYC that perhaps we were done with Target. Maybe it's in her contract that a certain number of shows have to be a Target commercial?
It was just TOOOOO much of a coincidence that the little side table just happened to be there at Target in the right shape and color.

You know, I think I don't mind the Target shopping. I live in a remote area of Wyoming, that doesn't have a Target....we have a KMart instead...and watching them shop at Target tonight gave me some ideas about the possibilities. I appreciate it.

Chaos, I don't think we'd mind it so much if it weren't such a blatant Target promotion. SS is a paid spokesperson for Target so it seems too convenient that she magically finds everything at Target.
There is nothing wrong with stretching your budget at Tartget. A couple years ago my assistant and I made over a room for two teenaged girls in a local childrens home as a charity project. We kept the cost under $500 and only had the two twin beds and two dressers in the room to start with. We scored big at Target on a sale and were able to get fun new bedding (sheets, blankets, comforters, shams), lamps, two area rugs, new shower curtain and towels for their bathroom, new curtains and rods, and some foo-foo accessories. We did get a few things at Walmart, and made padded ribbon bulletin boards with a trip to a local Joanne's. My point is, when you're on a tight budget stores like this can be very helpful - HOWEVER, I've seen other stores besides Target that offer good options also. If they want to do a 30 minute Target commercial, don't label it as a design show.

This show should come with a disclaimer in bold letters that Sabrina Soto is a paid spokesperson for Target. If she thinks that the viewers believe for one second that she designed that room prior to sourcing Target, she should try a career as a magician.

Please, please, please....

HGTV- put a more detailed how-to online of Chris's remake of the tree bookcase! If ever there was a project I saw on HGTV that I wanted to recreate, this would be it!

I loved this episode. Yes, there was a lot of Target- but I've come to expect that this would happen from time to time- and I don't mind.

This is one of my favorite current HGTV shows- in part because I can actually relate to the lower budgets- and because I do shop at Target and appreciate that they are not just shopping at stores that don't exist where I live- if there is something that might work for me, I know where I can go to get it.

And HGTV? YES! Please put more about the tree bookcase online!!!

Watched again today.... trying to glean what I can from watching the bookcase scenes (without a lot of luck)...

Anyway- I found that there was one thing that was confusing. In both the high and low end rooms, there was a large piece of artwork on the wall depicting trees.

But during the program, Sabrina actually did a tutorial on how to recreate the look with stretchers, canvas, batting and fabric.

Here's the confusing part.... the piece she showed was not in the low end room- and the big tree artwork was.

So.... did I miss something? Perhaps they felt the one she made was just too small and not a good match, so they kept the original for the reveal, and then replaced it with the smaller one?

Or maybe they didn't use it at all?

Anyway... does anyone have an explanation for this?

Noticed that too, TQ. Thought she was keeping the high-end but then she said something about making it for $100. Didn't she mention the high-end was Marimekko fabric? Wondered if they were tight on the budget - supposedly they didn't leave much on the table. IIRC, she said she was shortchanging Chris when she gave him $150 - he supposedly only spent $120 on the tree bookcase.

WRT the tree bookcase, thought he could have done a slightly better job, athough it was very good. In particular, the high-end had some curves but Chris' was totally angular. (It could have been cut out with a jig.) In addition, he mentioned it was narrower than the high-end. If he'd used add'l plywood (slightly more expensive) and stacked it, the shelves would have been thicker. It appeared some of the miscellaneous items (a small teddy bear, for example) didn't fit too well. Incidentally, I believe the high-end was fabricated out of mdf.

BTW, I did some checking on the bookcase. I'll post some add'l info on your other thread below, TQ, when I have a few minutes - unless someone already responded. Incidentally, those two were lucky SS didn't foist the cheap Tgt tree bookcase knock-off on them ($249) - Chris' version was far superior, IMHO. It appears Tgt currently has the best (cheaper) knock-off, however.

Overall, I liked the design of the room and thought SS did a good job. Yes, I was a little disappointed by the Tgt shopping - was hoping they'd stop after the initial online purchases. Don't you all love it when those happy camper Tgt employees offer assistance, as they did w/SS? (lol) Plus, they're already wired for sound!

Had 2 issues w/the design. First, I thought they'd need a changing table. The dresser looked too high to be workable with a changing pad on top. It was a small room so don't know where they'll place that. Then, most importantly, I was hoping to see SS purchase used furniture. IMHO, that's the best way to furnish kids' rooms, provided the items can be cleaned up.

Out of curiousity, I pulled up my local CL and saw name-brand used convertible cribs starting at $10 - no joke. Even noticed a beautiful cherry convertible sleigh bed w/attached changing station/diaper storage for $75! (That one probably could have been negotiated down for a couple of reasons, too.) So, I saw no reason to use 100% Tgt for this episode, even though their prices are certainly reasonable for baby/kids' items.

WRT the Tgt promo issue, I accepted it long ago, TQ - although I still hate it. When I saw this episode, I expected her to either use Ikea or Tgt. I do shop there myself but never for furniture. (Did any of you see the recent Gen Ikea episodes? They were actually far worse than SS Tgt excursions, to me.)

In spite of my acceptance, I'm still tracking Tgt episodes in my head. (useless info cluttering my brain - but that's another issue, haha.) So far, she's done 2 heavy Tgt episodes out of 5, IIRC. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe I counted about 25% last season. 25's o.k. but not sure I'll be happy if she hits 40% this season. We shall see.

JMHO.

P.S. Anyone else believe $2,800's a decent budget for a kid's room? Surprised SS didn't purchase another expensive rug to get that high-end far over 10K for the comparison. JMHO.

I know you love this show- not me...

FYI the current info is that there have been SO MANY crib recalls one should never buy a used crib unless one is absolutely sure its not on the recall LISTS!

I don't think I'd want a used crib, BB - but your other points were good, IMO.

Yes, I thought the budget was reasonable and I wouldn't have had to get all that stuff at Target, either.

I had the same questions about that tree art project - when SS was putting the smaller (and really dorky looking) one together I was literally yelling at the t.v. If I remember correctly, she said that the actual item was at a good enough price they decided to just use the one from the "high end" room.

Sorry to politely disagree with you profc but I don't love any HGTV show, period. If I had to pick a favorite, it definitely wouldn't be this one. I started doing these threads last season for one reason and one reason only - I'm neat and tidy.

If you don't care for this program, why do you post on these threads? If you didn't see the episode, then why is your opinion relevant to the discussion? It's just my modus operandi but I normally don't weigh in with my .02 unless and until I've seen at least part of the episode under discussion.

You obviously wouldn't care but I have better things to do with my life and time. In fact, when I do see HGTV, it's more likely to be love to hate them. If you take a look at many of my posts, you'll see what I mean.

In any event, ITA, doodles, purchasing a used crib is personal preference but still an option, IMHO. ETA: In fact, it would have been nice if SS had discussed used equipment and the various issues, omitting at least part of the Tarjait promo. Although I forgot to mention it, I'm well aware of that issue. If I were in the market for these items, then I would focus on it.

IIRC, those lists are well-publicized and readily available. All of the used cribs I noticed online were well-known, name brands - same for the other baby items available on CL. Thus, I would hope it wouldn't be difficult to research the models and satisfy the issue - although I'm no expert.

In particular, the $75 one I noticed was a very well-known brand, upscale, recent model and barely used. If someone doesn't mind the used factor and can put in a little sweat equity, they might consider cleaning it up and either repainting or staining it, if necessary to make it feel brand new to them.

JMHO.

Silly me! I didn't realize I had to love a program or needed anyones permission to post! I did notice that you do post on every episode, my assumption was that you favored the program.

My opinion is just as relevant as yours.

I did note something you did not mention and sincerely am sorry you feel I criticized you. As a former health professor and head nurse in a NICU - I am up to date on issues related to infants. I am still certified and a member of professional organizations. Not everyone is aware that crib recalls are as prevalent as they are. I certainly do not want a baby killed or injured due to lack of knowledge.

So now I'm a baby killer because I suggested they might simply consider purchasing used furniture in a kid's room!

You admitted above that you've never seen even one episode of this program. If you reviewed the title of the thread, then you know the subject matter was the episode itself. The subject matter of the thread was not me, personally and my personal likes or dislikes. I don't appreciate personal comments and don't believe they're relevant to the discussion.

I don't care about your professional background. I don't post on these boards about my own professional certifications and licenses. I don't consider myself better than anyone else or my opinion more important than anyone else's opinion. You obviously do or you wouldn't have included mention of your professional background in a post.

If you read my posts, then you know I suggested everyone review the relevant recall notices and other information. It's all readily available - I verified it. Baby-killer me also suggested that the program devote a segment to safety considerations and the recall information.

Furthermore, again, if you watched the episode, then you would know that the room also contained a glider, high-boy dresser and bookcase. My suggestion was that they consider used furniture in general, not only a crib. I also mentioned the lack of a changing table and expressed concern that the dresser was far too high to simply place a changing pad on top of it. You don't know this but the room was very small so that was part of my concern about the lack of a changing table.

Besides that, I also expressed concern as I watched the episode (but didn't post about it) that they hadn't explained how they secured the bookcase to the wall (in a stud?) and wondered if a child could pull it over on their head. I did post, however, that the constructed bookcase wasn't as substantial as the high-end. Safety was one of my primary considerations WRT that item, although I didn't specifically mention it above.

Hmmm, baby killer me was considering the safety the entire time I both watched the episode and posted about it. Oops, you didn't see the episode so you don't know what I'm talking about.

By all means, express your opinion, but IMHO, it's not relevant to a thread about the episode. You can set up your own thread any time. How about an I hate Sabrina Soto thread? Alternatively, why not set up an I hate The High-Low Project thread? (even though you've never seen the program, haha) I'm sure many people would join in. If I have something relevant to add to those discussions, I'll chime in, too.

Incidentally, I noticed above that you love (hahaha) using caps when posting. Given your professional background and numerous skills, I'm sure you understand that the use of caps online is considered yelling or screaming at other posters. Is that ever necessary or appropriate when posting on these boards?

All of the above is simply MHO. (My professional background, certifications and professional licenses don't matter on these boards, IMHO.)

This is a just plain ridiculous statement as is most of your post. I simply mentioned that one needs to be careful when buying used infant items. It was not a personal criticism and to get over wrought is simply beyond my comphrehension. You might note that Doodles said the same thing about used infant cribs.

As for my typing- I am recovering from a broken neck and my hands don't always work too well.

OK.... I must have missed when they said they could afford the original artwork- though I still wonder why on earth they would include the "how to" on a piece they didn't even use. Seems like they could have cut that and spent a little more time on something else (like maybe the bookcase)

And speaking of the bookcase- I did look up the Target version online. I wonder if they had originally intended on using that. I agree that it's best that they made their own knock off.

Oh... and did I miss your post about the bookcase? Or maybe you haven't had time? I just couldn't find it.

I suppose I could just figure it out myself. I could use MDF and sand the snot out of it to get the curves. (And lots of wood fill?) The most difficult part (from what I can estimate) would be getting the angles just right.

I'll have to put it on my list of things to try.

Hi TQ, sorry I'm so slow. Thanks for posting on topic, BTW. (I apologize for the distractions.)

WRT the tree, you probably already noticed this but, if anyone else is interested - the true high-end is available from the South Korean designer at $2,800. It's made out of steel and apparently requires a week of fabrication time.

I searched but couldn't find any plans. Someone in cyberspace mentioned plans but said they weren't in English. (Personally, I wonder if the plans disappeared when the high-end knock-off became available in the U.S.)

Sabrina's high-end knock-off is made of mdf and available from NurseryWorks at $850 - no shipping, at least when I initially checked. (Saw it a couple of days later on Amazon and they'd cranked the price up to $925 - after this aired.)

Personally, if I had my druthers, I'd love to purchase one and simply trace it. Couldn't find it anywhere retail and don't want to pay return shipping, however.

As an alternative, I'm thinking of enlarging (with a projector) one of the many online photos and drawing it, using the general dimensions indicated in the advertisements. ETA: Another way would be to use the online image and resize it by plotting the coordinates, using Autocad to complete the drawing.

I'd rather make it out of plywood (like Chris did, instead of mdf) but bulk it up as I suggested above. I would use a jig to cut the curves.

A few other, attractive versions are available online. (Don't know if you saw them.) In particular, I liked the shape of one made by an Italian designer. Another, very contemporary, adult version is also on the market.

No, I wasn't interested in the Target ($249) version either, although it's nice they had it available. (Could be another option, however - purchase that to trace a pattern but add curves and improve it.)

So, we'll see. Looks like a fun project -

WRT the fabric artwork - yeah SS did indicate that would be retained. It's sold by Marimekko as a run, i.e. the individual artwork piece, not by the yard. IIRC, it was $130. Too bad they didn't keep that or, as you mentioned, eliminate the project. As a project, stretching a fabric w/batting and frame/stretcher bars is pretty elementary, IMHO.

Hope the above helps, TQ. (I'll post a note on your other thread directing everyone up here.) If you get the time to do it, I have a feeling everyone would love to see your project. I'm a little too busy to start it right now.

Overwrought, uh, most definitely not, profc. I have a life. You're the one who decided to (inappropriately) get personal. Guess it wasn't enough of a clue when nobody responded to your initial, OT, negative comment. (AYK, if you have something else to say, you're always welcome to start a new thread or PM me.)

Don't know why you're now attempting to drag other posters into your drama. BTW, if you review the previous posts, you'll see that doodles didn't support your position, directly. If doodles wants to get involved, that's up to doodles. It's not up to you to put words in other posters mouths - or posts.

So, you're either lying about that previous post or you have a reading comprehension problem. We'll go with the former since you've implied numerous times, every time you've posted in fact, that you're superior to all of us.

According to your post, it's ridiculous to indicate other safety concerns noted about the episode. (Guess it took you down a notch when you weren't able to come up with those.) BTW, I had an additional one about cribs that wasn't a factor with the used ones. (Sorry, sorry - that's about the episode, again.) It's ridiculous to suggest the program address safety.

In addition, according to your post, it's ridiculous to ask posters to be courteous to others and remain on topic. It's ridiculous to ask posters to avoid yelling and screaming at others. (No, your post contained no typos. Again, you're lying.) It's ridiculous to indicate that the episode contained 4 items of furniture - not one. What's the topic of this thread?

If you cared at all about children, you would have applauded my suggestion that SS very briefly address the issue during the episode. Alternatively, you could have posted a link to the recall information. (My link function no longer works - after HGTV's changes - or I would have.) No, you were only interested in criticizing another poster and becoming personal.

Sorry you didn't receive your desired response. If you continue posting personally, it's coming right back at you. I'm willing to ignore general negativity (as I did, previously) but when it becomes personal, I'm not required to take it.

If you want to post about an episode, including any specific negative comments, I suggest you try watching it.

Again, I apologize to everyone else for this distraction.

All of the above, JMHO.

P.S. Golly gosh, my HLP won't record this evening. Oh Rhett, what'll I do?? I'm crying in my beer (not, haha) - overwrought, distraught, blah, blah, blah ...
