A couple of years ago, I was so sick of the "whimsy" or "whimsical" look. Now you're right it has been replaced with "pop"

The buzz word this season is

CRISP

take a tally of how many times you hear it on hgtv tonight. You can also check qvc and most catalogs. I told my husband one day.. he opened a catalog to a page yelling "CRISP".

I get sick of the designers saying "just wait until it is all done...trust me", when someone says they hate a color.

I hate orange and purple. If I say I hate orange and purple, then take that as a nagative, not aa lead-in for you to paint my house orange and/or purple. Because not only will I have orange and/or purple walls, I will have accessories with said colors.

If a HO says they don't like a color, don't tell them to "trust you". Believe me, you aren't going to hit on a new and innovative color to change their mind! lol

IA, Mainecoon!

My personal favorite - NOT! is "Brings the outside in."

The thing that irritates me the most is that so many of the homeowners/potential home buyers use the same buzz words. People would not ordinarily talk that way unless they are in the design business. It is obvious they are coached.

'Natural light'

'A great view'

'Green' (I am so sick of this word. We all get it already!)

Here's a couple more overused phrases:

"It's an easy fix"

"This island would be great for entertaining"

"You could have your morning coffee out here"

"I could sit here and read a book"

"I want hardwood floors, stainless steel appliances and granite countertops".

"Green" and "sustainable". Stop already. We know what you're saying. People buying these mansions are already using alot more electricity and natural gas and/or oil than many of us could ever hope to afford, so putting bamboo on the floor to pretend we're being "green" doesn't impress me.

"Pop" is the word that spawned a drinking game idea with my son and I. However, having to take a shot everytime it's said, would possibly cause alcohol poisoning, so we've actually refrained from playing.

We also get really riled up when we hear "more warm" instead of "warmer" or "more cold" rather than "colder." What's up with the bad grammar these days? This one could also land you in the hospital if you played it as a drinking game.....

"Warm." I'm so tired of people saying something is warm and inviting. Or "tie the room together." Pattijen2222 also summed up what annoys me in her post. They make watching House Hunters unbearable.

I had to laugh in reading all the posts on this subject. You're right - we decorators/designers/home stagers do use these words over and over and over (except you'll never hear "more warm" come out of my mouth Wink)
In our defense, though, sometimes it's the only way to get a point across and every industry has its own set of buzz words that become as natural to people in that industry as regular words are to the population at large.

How about 'Glam' or 'Glammy'? This term is like finger nails on a blackboard!

That's another one you'll never hear come out of my mouth. Gotta draw the line somewhere.

You may not hear it often but it has been said more than it use to be, "functionality."

function
functionless
functional
functionally
functionalism
functionalist
functionalistic
functionary
functionaries
Webster's NW Dictionary,
All the forms of function I found.

It raise the point where a person is describing or explaining something, and makes up a word to fit to sound intelligent (because they can't think of the correct word). Its something I think a lot of people have done or can identify with.
Those are the difficult words to catch because they almost sound like they are correct.
I don't mind it, no complaint with the process.

I just don't like the use of functionality even if is a correct form of the word.

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/functionality

Online dictionary that has the word as being correct.

I still don't like it.

Repurpose

from a few seasons back...
"Good to go"
"Change out".. redundant.. "change" usually does the trick.

one of the guy builder show hosts does a promo now and says something truely wrong.. can't think what it was.. either the blonde guy or the black haired one.

I totally agree with YARDBEE. I hate the way they use the word functionality or coloration. They really show their ignorance of proper English.

But my all time favorite is the people in the bedrooms who comment on the windows and how much wonderful light comes in. Yeah, that's what I want in my bedroom, lots of light.

I completely agree!

There was one last night or early this morning (I think it was a remodeling show) where the bedroom (a HUGE room) was to have cathedral ceilings with a row of windows about ten or twelve feet above the floor. No way to put curtains on them or drapes unless you also used electric operators and no way short of erecting scaffolding to do a decent job of cleaning them.

I hate when the wife says, 'Oh honey, here is my closet. Now where is your stuff going to go!?!' Or the RE agent says, 'Do you think all of your things will fit in here?' and the closet is bigger than my bedroom.

LOL! It is either "warm and inviting" or "light and airy."

I'm glad to see that other people are as tired of hearing about "green" this and "green" that as I am. We GET IT ALREADY!
