I love HGTV. It is the only channel I watch. Most of the shows are awesome. However design star winners are just not the caliber as the regular designers. Meg has the most annoying voice and I don't care for her work. Emily is even worse. The only time I change the channel is when either of these designers are on. Neither one of them seem experienced. It seems like they worked in some other field and thought I will yet designing but have no real training. I wish HGTV would let them go back to their real jobs. I love David Bromsted but the other winners just don't cut the mustard.

This is why I read these message boards. Everyone's opinions are so different. I thought David Bromstad was the best DS contestant, but I think he is the epitome of an artist from a different field thinking his talent translates to interior design.

Personally my favorite DS contestants "taste" was Tom, for me David's rooms look like somthing you would do for a temporary installation or a teenager's bedroom, all trend and no real substance. But that's just MHO.

Both of you put your finger on something I couldn't quite express.

I think the DS winners happen to be the ones who are just OK. Some contestants wouldn't be up to par as winners, but there ARE designers in the mix with quite a bit of experience. Heck, one of them had even been on the "Extreme Home Makeover" team. Granted, I don't think he was THE lead designer on the show...and that doesn't mean he'd have been good as a lead designer on his own.....but it was something other than just doing his house and those of family and friends...like Kim Myles.

I don't recall.....didn't they find Donna, of "Donna Does Dallas" through the Design Star proecess?

As for David Bromstad....

Wow, how insightful. I think that's true, too. His rooms are ALL TREND. For me, they're a little -- well --.... they're not really cluttered...not 'over the top' with Candice Olsen glitz/glamour -- but overwhelming in a 'color IN YOUR FACE! sort of way.

These are just a couple of reasons HGTV is not the design channel it used to be.
