What did you like and not like about my run on All American Handyman? Also check out my work that I do when I have more than 3 seconds to build /design at www.rodneyboyden.com I build/design/ and construct furniture and many other things throughout the country. Thanks so much for watching the show! I look forward to your comments. This message has been edited. Last edited by: The MAN!!!,

Hi Rodney, thanks for posting. Great job in the final challenge! I was sure when Sonne selected you that you'd give it your all and help her out. Can I ask 1 question? Any particular reason why Chris wasn't selected to assist in the final challenge? Mike seemed like a great guy but we weren't convinced that a kitchen install would be the best job for him. Chris also appeared to be a good teammate on the various group challenges. Either that or he scored a great edit from the producers! Also, if you have time to post any of the backstory about the production, working with Mike and Scott or any other juicy tidbits, I'm sure everyone would enjoy hearing it. Thanks and best of luck to you - P.S. Everything o.k. for Mike and his family? Wasn't the recent hurricane and flood centered in his hometown of Pearl River? If you're in touch, please give him (and everyone) our best. This message has been edited. Last edited by: SurfNow,

Thanks! As to Sonne choosing me, We all knew because of conversations after the show what we did for a living and myself and Scott build things for everyday. Scott has been building since a teenager and I have been design and building furniture and kitchens and baths for over 11 years. If you will notice on my site, all of my stuff is quit particular in its makeup and you have to be very good to pull off all of the cuts and special things that it involves. Sonne knew that I was strong in that area because i build kitchens, baths and cabinetry EVERYDAY!! LOL!!! Sooo I was shocked out of my mind that Scott did not choose me. Check out my site for example of what i am speaking of. wwww.rodneyboyden.com As for Mike verses Chris? Unlike myself, Mike had the opportunity to prove himself in his skill set and Scott thought that would transfer into trim and such. Not so!! You have to be familiar with a lot of things when it comes to kitchens an baths and Mike just wasn't in THIS case. Chris had just failed miserably with the crown so choosing him would have been a little tricky in this instance. Framing and hard line house building skills are totally different that Trim and finish work. They Build houses to drywall, I do the pretty stuff you see and use everyday. The episodes just never got to what I do until the end, so when i walked in and saw the kitchen, i almost DIED!!!!!

Your question about Scott and Mike. Scott is a cool guy!! He knows a lot about interior and well as construction and that is a really good thing. they are really tuff on little things but it makes you better in the long run. Mike is what some would call a (.........) but he is not that at all!!!! He is the smartest Man I know as it relates to home construction and what needs to be done and how. My only drawback is that there is in some cases is more than one way to skin a cat but we only had one cat on the show so that is all that matters. They both are the greatest guys because I respect the knowledge and time it takes to gain it.

Thanks for responding, Rodney. Glad AAH was a good experience for you and also fun! Don't know if you realize but some viewers over the years have believed the outcome was predetermined. Did any of you as contestants believe that? Also, was anyone kept around longer than they should have been for dramatic purposes? Thanks again and best of luck to you - P.S. If you have the time to post more of the backstory on your blog about each specific episode or your AAH experience in general, I'm sure many viewers would check it out. JMHO.

I think that the judges could really see the potential in each contestant and i believe that the outcome was a direct result of the winners ability to at least TRY to follow direction and read directions!!! if you r asking me if they kept me around because i was making funny statements or funny faces, it is good TV but my skills speak volumes if you have seen my work. Have you? When you don't know a lot, you will lean on the directions, For example, when i buy something that needs to be assembled, because I know the process so well, i usually don't need the directions but someone who never does it, will reach for them first. Sonne has some skills for sure but she is at the beginning of what her skills will come to be, so she leaned on the directions as well as listened (in the last episodes) to the words of the judges. She won because she listened! Period!! So, the lesson i take from it is, no matter how much you think you know, LISTEN!!! They watched more method than anything! Lesson learned!!! LOL! I would never think that a Jungle GYm Chris because of saftry

Episode 1 Fx toilet if you cannot fix or replace a toilet it is to a big deal, just don't say you can when someone needs it done. It was clear that lots of them did not know how but they tried. Scott won that only because my cap on the screw was not snapping because i was finished 1st and was the neatest as well. The doghouse was just crazy! when most think of a Doghouse they see what you saw on the show. DOG HOUSE!! Little House!!!! Chris won because he began to listen to the judge say sturdy!!!! Glue glue glue!!!! He used glue the rest of the show!!!! LOL!!! everybody else wow tinging about the house and not the rules! my house as a direct result of my creativity but this show was not about that AT ALL!!!!! THAT is why i LOST!!! ! never made that connection!!!

EXAMPLE!!!! I want you to build a shed that will sit buy the water and it needs to be 10'x10' but only 3'tall. Make it sturdy and remember we are in Seattle so there is a lot of rain and flooding! Answer there person who will win this challenge is the person who addresses the last statement by making 24" to 30" piers so that the thing does not float away! Mike would have said, Rodney we love you Shed BUT it will to be a see long because when it rains it will float away!!!

Chris and his team won because they put those slats on the side so that the kids who were swinging would not hit kids coming from under the gym. Remember Mike said, Make it SAFE!!! Not how many fun things it could have like Teeter Totters... LOLO!! but Make it SAFE!!! They WON because nobody else did that! else did any true stay things.

Appreciate you posting back, Rodney. BTW, I actually wasn't thinking about you when I asked about contestants remaining for dramatic purposes. Fortunately, AAH doesn't promote as much drama among the contestants as other competition reality programs. Have watched AAH from its HGTV-US beginning and this year it didn't feel as if the winner was predetermined. Don't know if you either watched AAH last year or saw replays in preparation for your appearance. We felt Allison definitely won the final competition. No offense to Sonne but would have to believe Allison has/had more skills than Sonne. Yes, Allison followed all of those pesky Mike/Scott instructions to "make it right" - to borrow Mike's catch phrase. Enjoyed hearing more of the backstory from the episodes. If you have time to post again, I'm sure everyone would enjoy it. Best of luck in your career -

Allison was good. I think she was stronger in the framing than Sonne for sure. I never knew that this show would lean so heavily on construction but it was 90% framing. Choosing a winner in advance is something i think we will never know but i am going to to take HGTV at its word and believe it did not do that!! This year, the best framer did not win, the most designer and creative furniture man did not win, Mr. Fix it did not win, the outdoor kitchen glue man did not win, but the one who followed directions best in the last 2 episodes WON!!! That is IT!!! Alyonne played the game well and she deserves all of the credit for that. Also, i think that this was the most DRama filled version of this show to date and that WAS on purpose! LOL!!!!This message has been edited. Last edited by: The MAN!!!,

Julia Julia Julia!!!! That episode was crazy because it was my first time working with a partner who i knew was slow and very methodical. In normal circumstances that would have been ok because time would not have played as big of a part. I just tried to handle it all myself to get it done. We tried. Again, this was a framing challenge! Sturdy Won AGAIN!!! 2x6 2x10 2x12 all day!!! Framing!!

Good Conversation! | ||||

Hi Rodney, thanks for the add'l info. It's funny - the drama didn't seem bad this year. Possibly because most people pretty much left when expected (to us, anyway) and weren't purposely kept around longer to stir things up. Agree, however, some did their best to create conflict when there. (Carol, anyone?) Some of the challenges were very different from previous years. Did they ever say who'd designed them? Had they tried them first on the Canada version? Although the waking baby skit felt very unrealistic (most people would take the baby out for the day) and contrived, it was fun to watch as a viewer. Surprised you shot in LA because Scott and Mike are both based in Toronto. Were they already out there for another reason? How many days/weeks did the entire production take? Did they keep all of you around after your elimination, until the finale? What was your impression of Anitra? Does she serve any purpose besides calling time and presenting the challenges? Many of us didn't understand why they didn't simply eliminate that position and have Scott and Mike host/announce everything themselves. Sorry to bombard you with more questions. Can't help it - longtime viewers. Thanks for your time. Have a great weekend!

Having a Carol just makes the show more interesting!! Every show needs one. As to the challenges I don't think they had ever tried it but your last statement speaks to the point that "It was FUN TO WATCH"!! That is what it was meant to be an it accomplished that! :-) I cant really answer the next set of question because of contractual issues but it took 3 weeks to shoot 6 shows. After having all of these guys on the show i guess they thought it wise to have some beauty as well! She is quit cute!!! I can say that shows are meant to be entertaining and if it is, then they got some great stuff. Even though ii seems like I came out looking like I had no idea what the heck I was doing, i still am glad i did it because it was too much fun!! Remember, it is a show! Just a show and the reality of all of the people is a little skewed to say the least but it is GOOD TV!!!!

For the last 12 years I have been experiencing the art of building and constructing some very nice things throughout the country from Texas to New York. It is amazing how one a situation that was meant to be something fun can turn on you. I had a conversation this past week with 2 people and I feel that this is a good idea of what America got from my show run on All American Handyman. They said these words to me in short. You are very creative but and I would have you design everything and have somebody else build it" WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That was like a knife in the side!!!! For years I have prides myself in the construction of things that people live in like room additions, sit on like chairs and benches and walk on like decks along with many other things and one set of shows can throw all of that in the trash as though you don't know anything. It is sad but true that apparently as you have said, I looked like I was a mess!!!! So sad. I would only hope that this opinion does not rest in the mind of the masses. I will not give any opinions on the footage of the show because it was what I considered fun while I was doing it but it has seemingly set me up to be disrespected in the minds of many as having NO construction ability AT ALL. Nothing I have ever built has ever fallen apart or broken and I have a good reputation to this fact but that is not what American saw. All I can say is UNFORTUNATE FOR ME!! Thanks!!

Seriously, Rodney, don't give the show drama another thought. Most of us realize that the challenges were not representative of the projects that you guys do on a daily basis, in real life. In addition, we obviously know that the times allotted were ridiculous. BTW, for example, I was disappointed that you weren't given a chance to complete the outdoor BBQ area. During that episode, I hoped that Mike/Scott would extend the time period. (IIRC, they did that at least once on the previous season.) I liked you design and wanted to see the finished product. If I were you, I'd also try to remember that any publicity is good publicity! Many viewers will remember your name. That's always good. Plus, they developed/presented a dramatic character, if you will - Rodney, the designer/carpenter. Exploit that, if you wish. One thing, if you'd like a suggestion for your website - I would add more AAH references and links, if possible. It looks like you intended to start a blog but didn't have time. If you can post more of the show backstory there and beef up the links, more people may find you on search engines. Just a thought - Because you performed well enough to remain for most of the AAH episodes and they developed your character, you might have a better shot than Sonne (no offense to her) at scoring a small part as a TV carpenter, if you're interested in trying it. They must have liked you, man! Don't worry, be happy. Best of luck and take care - hope we see you again! All, just my 2 cents, as you know.

Closing in Porch with large class widows and building small deck this weekend in Dallas.

I only have one question. All of you seemed to me that you were all more than just handymen. I would say more on the professional side. Also, there where things that in my State, you would need a license to do. I guess it wasn't necessary for the show. Does the need to have a license comes up at all?
|
Thanks for your comments. In most states you really are supposed to get a permit to do most any thing especially when it comes to electrical and plumbing. You can do jobs without one but having your work inspected covers your you know what if something were to go wrong. I have noticed that you can be a handyman around your own house but be well versed when venturing out into the community. Most of the people on the show have different backgrounds such as the Military,Home Depot, Movie set work, shop teacher and stay at home mom. Only half of my fellow contestants do this type of work for a living. Licence never came up but as you said this show was more about the skill set of a handy person. Thanks
|
WOW ALL Stars??? You really want to step it up a notch Rodney. The competition will be tougher with all the talent from season 2. You did some great stuff on your show, and the stuff on your website looks great too. Cheers man, I look forward to the challenge hopefully one day it will happen!! Anything can happen on reality TV Shaun Killman

I would imagine that to be very true Shaun. I don't think I would be on there because I am an interior guy really. Out show was more about 2x6 than trim work and design. I did not watch your season but I do remember you made it to the top or close to it. Even if I were not on it, I would watch! Thanks for the compliment! Great to meet you! RDB
|
Nice to see you post, Shaun. You did a great job on your season of AAH! How's everything?
|
Thanks I really appreciate the great compliment, I had an awesome time on the show. I am doing great, I am very busy with custom work. Some stuff featured on MLB network, and all of my work can be seen on my website. Although I need to add some of the recent things. Please check it out! www.shaunkillman.com Thanks Shaun Killman
